Australian airline Qantas will require travel<\/a>ers on international flights to be jabbed with a coronavirus vaccine once an inoculation is ready, CEO Alan Joyce said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you need that domestically, we\u2019ll have to see what happ<\/a>ens with COVID-19 in the market, but certainly for international visitors coming out and people leaving the country, we think that\u2019s a necessity,\u201d Joyce said in a Monday interview with the Australian news program \u201cA Current Affair.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s largest airline is planning to enshrine the mandate in its terms and conditions, which would be amended to say that international travelers must be vaccinated before they can board a Qantas plane, Joyce said.<\/p>\n

Other airlines are likely to impose similar requirements once health regulators around the world approve a vaccine, according to Joyce. He said the policies could be enforced by providing travelers with a digital \u201cvaccination passport\u201d that shows what vaccine they\u2019ve received and whether it\u2019s \u201cacceptable to the country you\u2019re traveling to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m talking to my colleagues in other airlines around the globe and I think it\u2019s going to be a common theme across the board,\u201d Joyce said in the interview<\/a>. \u201c\u2026 There\u2019s a lot of logistics, a lot of technology<\/a> that\u2019ll be needed to put in place to make this happen, but the airlines and the governments are working on this as we speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joyce revealed the plans as drugmakers made significant progress toward developing a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, which is considered key to helping airlines and other beaten-down industries recover from the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have all said their experimental shots are highly effective, and Pfizer\u2019s candidate could be distributed in the US by the end of December if regulators clear it for emergency use.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
