“#Jim Mattis urges Biden to end Trump’s ‘America first’ policy<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is urging Joe Biden to dump President Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica First\u201d foreign policy for a more \u201ccooperative\u201d app<\/a>roach with the country\u2019s allies around the globe.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn January, when President Joe Biden and his national security team begin to reevaluate U.S. foreign policy, we hope they will quickly revise the national security strategy to eliminate \u2018America first\u2019 from its contents, restoring in its place the commitment to cooperative security that has served the United States so well for decades,\u201d Mattis wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine<\/a> in an op-ed published Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best strategy for ensuring safety and prosperity is to buttress American military strength with enhanced civilian tools and a restored network of solid alliances \u2013 both necessary to achieving defense in depth,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Mattis, who stepped down in December 2018 after clashing with Trump\u2019s policy against protracted engagement in Syria, said \u201c\u2018America first\u2019 has meant \u2018America alone.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States today is undermining the foundations of an international order manifestly advantageous to U.S. interests, reflecting a basic ignorance of the extent to which both robust alliances and international institutions provide vital strategic depth,\u201d Mattis wrote adding that the policy \u201chas damaged the country\u2019s ability to address problems before they reach U.S. territory and has thus compounded the danger emergent threats pose.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the article titled \u201cDefense in Depth,\u201d Mattis criticized Trump and Biden for referring to \u201cforever wars\u201d in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration earlier this month announced that the Pentagon will cut US forces in Afghanistan to 2,500 from 4,500, and in Iraq to 2,500 from 3,000.<\/p>\n

Mattis said the troops and diplomats stationed in Asia, Europe and the Middle East act as an \u201cearly warning system\u201d that raise necessary alarms about threats that develop and give the US time to react.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo dismiss U.S. involvement today in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere as \u2018endless\u2019 or \u2018forever\u2019 wars \u2013 as both President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden do \u2013 rather than as support to friendly governments struggling to exert control over their own territory misses the point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is in the United States\u2019 interests to build the capacity of such governments to deal with the threats that concern Americans; that work isn\u2019t quick or linear, but it is an investment in both greater security and stronger relationships and preferable to the United States\u2019 indefinitely having to take care of threats on its own,\u201d he continued.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
