\n Pete Davidson is tackling Christmas canon: George Bailey in \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a casting move that\u2019s sure to unhinge many a classic film purist, the tatted up \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d star is set to take on the wholesome role made famous by screen icon Jimmy Stewart in Frank Capra\u2019s 1946 holiday mainstay.<\/p>\n

Davidson, 27, will be joined the by his \u201cKing of Staten Island\u201d co-star Maude Apatow (\u201cEuphoria\u201d), the 22-year-old actress daughter of comedy filmmaker Judd Apatow and actress Leslie Mann.<\/p>\n

Apatow is set to portray the character of Violet Bick, the role originated by Gloria Graham, in Ed Asner\u2019s one-night-only live virtual table read of the beloved script<\/a> set to livestream at 5 p.m. PT and 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 13, Deadline reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The young duo headlines a veteran all-star cast featuring Mia Farrow, Ellie Kemper, Bill Pullman, Richard Kind, Carol Kane, Ed Begley Jr., Diedrich Bader, B.D. Wong, Michael Shannon \u201cand special surprise guests.\u201d<\/p>\n

Proceeds will benefit the non-profit Ed Asner Family Center, which is dedicated to promoting mental health and enrichment programs for special needs children and their families. Advance tickets are available for $50 to $250 at EdAsnerFamilyCenter.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Davidson, fresh off critical acclaim for \u201cKing of Staten Island,\u201d will assume Stewart\u2019s role of George Bailey, a man who gave up his own dreams to help others, and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve spurs the intervention of a guardian angel, Clarence Odbody.<\/p>\n

Through a series<\/a> of moving flashbacks and time jumps, Clarence exposes how George has touched the lives of others and how starkly different life would be for his wife Mary and his community if he had never been born.<\/p>\n

Capra\u2019s original film \u2014 based on the short story \u201cThe Greatest Gift\u201d by Philip Van Doren Stern<\/a> \u2014 was a critical and box office disappointment upon its initial release. At one point, J. Edgar Hoover\u2019s FBI actually investigated it<\/a> as possible \u201ccommunist propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, it went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards and is now recognized by\u00a0the\u00a0American Film Institute<\/a> as one of the\u00a0100 best American films ever made. In 1990, \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d was designated as \u201cculturally, historically or aesthetically significant\u201d<\/a> and added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n
