It certainly seems like the new\u00a0Scream\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>movie (which is the fifth film in the franchise but confusingly just called\u00a0Scream<\/em> again) is going to be a direct sequel to the previous four films and not a reboot. Even though the sequel angle was app<\/a>arent due to returning cast members like Neve Campbell<\/strong>, Courtney Cox<\/strong>, and\u00a0David Arquette<\/strong>, there was always a chance that the new\u00a0Scream<\/em> could follow in the footsteps of 2018\u2019s\u00a0Halloween<\/em>, which was both a direct sequel to the original\u00a0Halloween<\/em> and a reboot because it ignored all the subsequent sequels. But according to directors\u00a0Matt Bettinelli-Olpin<\/strong> and Tyler Gillett<\/strong>, the new\u00a0Scream<\/em> movie directly connects to the previous four films.<\/p>\n

There was some grumbling in the horror community last week when it was revealed that\u00a0Scream 5<\/em> was going to just be called\u00a0Scream<\/em> again. This isn\u2019t without precedent \u2013 the 2011 prequel to John Carpenter\u2019s\u00a0The Thing<\/em> was just called\u00a0The Thing<\/em>, and 2018\u2019s\u00a0Halloween<\/em> reboot just went ahead and used\u00a0Halloween<\/em> as its official title. But what are we to make of the new\u00a0Scream<\/em>? Is it a reboot like\u00a0Halloween<\/em> \u2013 one that brings back original cast members but ignores much of the mythology? Or is it going to be a direct sequel?
\nAccording to directors\u00a0Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett,\u00a0Scream<\/em> 2022 is definitely going to honor the sequels before it. \u201cThere\u2019s just so much weight in what those four movies<\/a> are,\u201d Gillett said (via CinemaBlend<\/a>). \u201cThis by the way speaks to the legacy characters. The fact that there are so many characters that so many people want to know more about, want to have more story told with these characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The director continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that there are so many characters that so many people want to know more about, want to have more story told with these characters. There\u2019s just a level of love and respect for the world that Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] created. So for us it felt like the only way to do this right was to create connectivity. And a lot of it is also just what the\u00a0Scream\u00a0movies are, right? They\u2019re about lineage. They\u2019re about the evolution of pop culture and the evolution of the genre. And you can\u2019t have something new without also giving a nod to what came before it. And paying respect, and giving a bow to what followed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Gillett also said that the film will have a \u201cconnection to the past\u201d while creating \u201cnew and interesting characters that would bring a new audience and an old audience together.\u201d In summary:\u00a0Scream<\/em> is a sequel, not a reboot. And that\u2019s good to know \u2013 although we still really have no idea what the plot of the movie will entail.<\/p>\n

Scream<\/em> is set to open on January 14, 2022<\/strong>.
