The Movie:\u00a0<\/strong>Tesla<\/em><\/p>\n

\nThe Pitch:\u00a0<\/strong>A biopic of\u00a0Nikola Tesla that avoids the standard biopic trapp<\/a>ings.<\/p>\n

Why It\u2019s Essential Quarantine Viewing:\u00a0<\/strong>Tesla<\/em> had a very, very limited release, and now it\u2019s streaming on Hulu \u2013 which is the perfect opportunity for people to discover it. The story of Nikola Tesla has been covered on film before \u2013 be it in Christopher Nolan\u2019s\u00a0The Prestige<\/em>, or the recent The Current War<\/em>. But\u00a0Michael Almereyda\u2019s take on the great inventor bucks tradition and goes for a weirder, more surreal approach to Tesla\u2019s life. It\u2019s an approach other filmmakers making biopics would be wise to try for themselves rather than giving us the same old boring crap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whenever I tell someone about\u00a0Tesla<\/em>, I make sure to start off by mentioning how unconventional it is. I mention that there\u2019s a scene in this film where Nikola Tesla, as played by Ethan Hawke<\/strong>, performs karaoke (he sings the Tears for Fears song \u201cEverybody Wants To Rule The World\u201d). And then there\u2019s a scene where Tesla and Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan<\/strong>) get into an argument and start smashing ice cream cones into each other\u2019s faces. And oh yeah, the entire movie is narrated by someone surfing Google.<\/p>\n

Like I said: unconventional.\u00a0Telsa<\/em> is telling a story that was recently covered in\u00a0The Current War<\/em>, with Tesla becoming the enemy of Edison as they duke it out for electrical supremacy. But while\u00a0The Current War<\/em> \u2013 which really wasn\u2019t that bad \u2013 followed a rather by-the-numbers approach to the story,\u00a0Tesla<\/em> does anything but. Employing projected, obviously fake background and not really worrying about anachronisms, writer-director Michael Almereyda<\/strong> effectively sends an electric charge into the biopic formula. It\u2019s ambitious, it\u2019s weird, it\u2019s pretty damn great.<\/p>\n

All of this is anchored by yet another great performance from Ethan Hawke, who embraces and embodies Tesla\u2019s brilliance and mania. Hawke also wisely avoids leaning into Tesla\u2019s accent \u2013 there\u2019s a trace of it there, but the actor is more interested in the man\u2019s awkwardness and his inability to connect with other human beings rather than trying to cobble together a clunky impersonation.
\nHampered at every turn, Tesla is a brilliant inventor who just can\u2019t really click with humanity. Unlike Edison, who knows how to be a bit of a showman, Tesla wants his work to speak for itself \u2013 but that\u2019s easier said than done. The sad fact is that the real Tesla died penniless in a hotel, his body undiscovered for two days. His work fell into obscurity, only to be rediscovered \u2013 and praised \u2013 years later. It\u2019s fitting that the first real biopic all about him would be as unconventional and strange as he apparently was. Best of all,\u00a0Tesla<\/em> is a movie that admits it doesn\u2019t have all the answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe historical record is in many ways obscure, unreliable, incomplete,\u201d\u00a0Almereyda said<\/a>. \u201cAcknowledging that became part of the story, an essential part. And I felt it was worthwhile to bring in a character asking questions I continue to ask about him. Trying to get closer to him and not succeeding\u2014that failure became part of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n
