\n Thailand authorities claimed to have made the \u201clargest ketamine bust\u201d in the country\u2019s history earlier this month \u2014 only the \u201cdrugs\u201d turned out to be a common cleaning solvent.<\/p>\n

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said Tuesday that a \u201ctechnical error\u201d during field testing had led to the original false claim, the Bangkok Post reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a misunderstanding that our agency must accept,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n

The nation\u2019s anti-narcotics agency on Nov. 12 had proudly announced the seizure of 11.5 tons of ketamine, a sedative used as a party drug, from a warehouse in the Chachoengsao province, close to Bangkok.<\/p>\n

But lab tests later found that the powdery white substance was actually trisodium phosphate \u2014 a chemical compound commonly used as a cleaning agent, stain remover and even food additive.<\/p>\n

At a press conference announcing the supposed historic seizure, the country\u2019s Office of Narcotics Control Board said it had acted on a tip that a foreign drug network planned to smuggle the ketamine to Taiwan via Thailand, The Nation reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe drugs are the largest amount ever seized in Thailand\u2026,\u201d Wichai Chaimongkhol, the agency\u2019s secretary-general<\/a>, had declared.<\/p>\n

The justice minister explained Tuesday that the mix-up occurred because preliminary tests, which turn purple in the presence of ketamine, react the same to trisodium phosphate.<\/p>\n

He later admitted that it \u201cmight have been premature to hold a press conference\u201d at such an early stage.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
