“#778,000 workers seek unemployment aid<\/strong>”

\n Some 778,000 American workers app<\/a>lied for unemployment benefits last week as a surge in coronavirus infections kept the labor market\u2019s recovery under pressure, the feds said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The latest initial jobless claims reported by the US Department of Labor brought the seasonally adjusted total for the COVID-19 pandemic to about 68.9 million \u2014 a number nearly as large as the population of Thailand.<\/p>\n

New unemployment filings have risen for two straight weeks and stayed above the pre-pandemic record of 695,000 for nine solid months even though millions of people have returned to their jobs since the pandemic sidelined them in the spring \u2014 progress that could be hampered by new lockdowns amid a record-setting spike in cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 20 million Americans on some form of unemployment assistance may find it challenging to be as thankful as they would like to be, with many unable to put a traditional celebratory meal on the table,\u201d said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.com, referring to the combined number of people collecting checks from state and federal aid programs.<\/p>\n

Last week\u2019s initial claims came in above economists\u2019 expectations for 730,000 filings, according to Wrightson ICAP. While it\u2019s normal for filings to spike around this time of year, \u201cit\u2019s difficult to determine between what might be normal seasonal layoffs and pandemic layoffs,\u201d Glassdoor senior economist Daniel Zhao said.<\/p>\n

Continuing claims, which measure ongoing joblessness on a one-week lag, continued their steady decline by falling to about 6 million in the week ending Nov. 14 from nearly 6.4 million the prior week.<\/p>\n

But the number of people claiming extended benefits from the feds after exhausting their 26 weeks of state unemployment payments climbed once again to roughly 4.5 million in the week ending Nov. 7, the most recent for which figures are available.<\/p>\n

Such long-term jobless workers will be cut off from those extra payments,\u00a0which were provided under the CARES Act, on Dec. 26 unless Congress acts to extend the program.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
