\n Stephen Dorff only had \u201csix or seven weeks\u201d to get into believable shape as a UFC champ in \u201cEmbattled,\u201d and somehow he did it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was coming off \u2018True Detective\u2019,\u201d he told The Post. \u201cI would have liked to have had three months, but I had six or seven weeks and jumped right in with my physical trainer. Put as much size on me as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dorff continued to explain his prep work for the film, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime<\/a>: \u201c[I] put on about nine pounds of muscle by eating and exhausting training and we had to kind of Cliff Notes it because we didn\u2019t have the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor noted that \u201cyou can\u2019t over-train. You need the muscles to rest. It\u2019s just a question of hitting it every day and eating a lot. The truth is I\u2019m pretty lean most of the time. I was a little skinny at the end of \u2018True Detective,\u2019 I needed to build up my back and lats and shoulders and then you have muscle memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cliff Notes or not, the 47-year-old actor looks entirely believable as a seasoned fighter who goes up against his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really dark look at father-son relationships against the backdrop of UFC which is bigger than it\u2019s ever been,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s nothing like the relationship he had with his father, songwriter Steve Dorff, who penned \u201cEvery Which Way But Loose,\u201d<\/a> the Eddie Rabbitt title track from the 1978 Clint Eastwood film.<\/p>\n

Dorff said his parents were \u201cincredibly nurturing\u201d and credits them for not falling prey to the excesses that Hollywood offers young stars. After all, he started acting as a kid, app<\/a>earing on sitcoms like \u201cRoseanne,\u201d \u201cMarried\u2026with Children,\u201d and \u201cBlossom.\u201d<\/p>\n

He first gained widespread attention for 1992\u2019s \u201cThe Power of One\u201d opposite Morgan Freeman, Sir John Gielgud, and the next year starred opposite Alicia Silverstone in the music video \u201cCryin\u2019\u201d by Aerosmith. Since then, Dorff has balanced his career between big-budget movies<\/a> like \u201cWorld Trade Center\u201d and more indie fare like John Waters\u2019 \u201cCecil B. Demented.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI always looked up to the guys who were older than me, the Sean Penns, the Johnny Depps, and I looked at their careers<\/a> and their choices and how they would make a big movie but then make a movie with John Waters or a tiny movie with Jim Jarmusch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always thought that was interesting if you could have a career at the end of the day that\u2019s not one specific thing,\u201d he added. \u201c \u2018Oh he\u2019s been an action star for eight years and now he\u2019s doing insurance commercials.\u2019 I didn\u2019t want to have that career. I wanted to work with great directors and have great experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dorff said\u00a0 part of what he loves about acting is the opportunity to learn about other disciplines like architecture and art.<\/p>\n

The \u201cPublic Enemies\u201d star reveals that through Dennis Hopper he has been able to meet artists like Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, and Kenny Scharf and has collected art over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve sold some stuff along the years when I needed some extra moola,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI had so many opportunities that I could kill myself for not taking back in the day. But you live and you learn. I\u2019m hoping I never have to sell again. And I\u2019m not in that game<\/a> of flipping them. I look at art as pictures I want to look at.\u201d<\/p>\n
