Usually, federal ministers caught in the federal auditor general\u2019s crosshairs show <strong>contrition<\/strong> and resolve to <strong>do better<\/strong>. They almost never deny the AG\u2019s conclusions. Not so yesterday at Queen\u2019s Park. On the heels of\u00a0<strong>Bonnie Lysyk<\/strong>\u2018s three-part special report on the province\u2019s pandemic response, Ford gave no quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Lysyk\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/auditor.on.ca\/en\/content\/specialreports\/specialreports\/COVID-19_reflections_en20.pdf\"><strong>blistering report<\/strong><\/a> found that Ontario\u2019s chief medical officer of health, Dr. <strong>David Williams<\/strong>, \u201cdid not lead\u201d the province\u2019s response and \u201cdid not fully exercise his powers\u201d under the laws on the books. Lysyk went deep on the government\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/auditor.on.ca\/en\/content\/news\/specials_newsreleases\/summary_COVID-19_ch1EMO.pdf\">emergency preparedness<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/auditor.on.ca\/en\/content\/news\/specials_newsreleases\/summary_COVID-19_ch2outbreakplanning.pdf\">outbreak planning<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/auditor.on.ca\/en\/content\/news\/specials_newsreleases\/summary_COVID-19_ch3testingandtracing.pdf\">testing and tracing capabilities<\/a>. And the AG\u2019s office is planning a second round of reports on COVID-19 expenditure management, PPE and <strong>long-term care<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ford was unimpressed with the scope of Lysyk\u2019s work.\u00a0\u201cI have some serious, serious problems with this report. To say that Dr. Williams wasn\u2019t leading this response, it just isn\u2019t right,\u201d he said before firing a shot across the AG\u2019s bow. \u201cDon\u2019t start <strong>pretending you\u2019re a doctor<\/strong> or health professional, because I can tell you, you aren\u2019t. <strong>Stick with the numbers<\/strong>, stick with the number crunching.\u201d \u00a0<strong>Watch his full remarks.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>And read Patricia Treble\u2019s\u00a0<strong>full analysis of the report and Ford\u2019s response<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The COVID vaccine plan:<\/strong>\u00a0As the Liberals take heat from their opposition for not clearly communicating its plan on vaccinating Canadians, Aaron Hutchins spoke to Health Canada\u2019s chief medical advisor, <strong>Dr. Supriya Sharma<\/strong>, about what the feds\u00a0<em>can<\/em> say about the vaccine rollout\u2014everything from where doses will be manufactured to when we\u2019ll all be stabbed in the arm.\u00a0Here\u2019s what Sharma had to say about the best-case scenario for getting inoculations underway:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019re hoping that by <strong>January<\/strong>, at the earliest, we may be starting to immunize people. That means authorization is done. Logistics is sorted. And, most importantly, there has to be a vaccine to be distributed. We\u2019re all gearing towards having vaccinations h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en in the <strong>first quarter of 2021<\/strong>.\u00a0But it can happen earlier if things move faster. It can also be later if issues come up.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Canada\u2019s escape from planet Earth?<\/strong>\u00a0In the most recent print issue of\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>, Shannon Gormley writes that Canada\u2019s salvation from our\u00a0politically fraught neighbour to the south,\u00a0and all its <strong>mass-manufactured instability<\/strong>, may require us to look up\u2014way up\u2014to that big ball of cheese in the night sky. Hear her out. She has a plan:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are many things that are great about outer space\u2014zero gravity! shooting stars! aliens, maybe!\u2014but I think we can all agree that its most attractive feature is that it is not directly adjacent to the United States. <strong>Location is everything<\/strong>, and outer space was clever enough to position itself with an entire atmosphere between its boundary and the rapid <strong>descent into madness<\/strong> of the planet\u2019s single most powerful actor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>ATIP of the day: <\/strong>A\u00a0Department of National Defence briefing note on <strong>NATO burden sharing<\/strong>, prepared a few months before the military alliance met in December 2019, admitted that Canada \u201cdoes not currently have a plan in place\u201d to meet a shared commitment to spend 2 per cent of GDP on defence. The note, obtained by\u00a0<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> via an access-to-information request, positions the spending issue as a \u201ctop focus\u201d for the Trump administration that would \u201cfeature prominently\u201d at the summit. DND beefs up its overall spending totals by adding spending from\u00a0<em>other<\/em> departments. The department redacted those figures from the briefing note, but a spokesperson said they add up to\u00a0<strong>$5.3 billion<\/strong> per year. That takes overall 2019-20 spending to\u00a0<strong>$29.6 billion<\/strong>, or 1.29 per cent of GDP.<\/p>\n<p>A new StatsCan survey says\u00a0<strong>90 per cent<\/strong> of Canadians have either \u201csome\u201d or \u201ca great deal of\u201d <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/85-002-x\/2020001\/article\/00014-eng.htm\">confidence in police<\/a><\/strong>. But only 41 per cent were in the \u201cgreat deal\u201d bucket, and that number was lower for people who had physical disabilities, (38%) mental or cognitive disabilities (33%), visible minorities (35%), as well as Indigenous people (30%). Only 42 per cent said police were \u201ctreating people fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u00a0<em>is<\/em> a hometown, anyway?<\/strong>\u00a0Global News reporter <strong>David Akin<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidakin\/status\/1331691010888511493\">raised some hackles<\/a> with a tweet about Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong>\u2018s roots. The PM noted in question period that he\u2019s a Montrealer and a Quebecer. Akin noted Trudeau was born in Ottawa and once called himself a proud Franco-Ontarien. He also lived in B.C.
