\n Black actor Faizon Love is suing Universal for cutting him out of the poster for the 2009 comedy \u201cCouples Retreat\u201d \u2014 accusing leading man Vince Vaughn of trying to help silence him, according to reports.<\/p>\n

The 52-year-old actor said in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that he was \u201caghast\u201d when he saw he and his co-star, Kali Hawk, chopped from publicity posters overseas, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than enjoy maximum visibility with the film\u2019s release, Mr. Love was demoted to the proverbial \u2018Invisible Man,’\u201d the lawsuit said, referring to Ralph Ellison\u2019s civil-rights novel.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough Couples Retreat achieved a first-place box office opening weekend ranking, and went on a spectacular run that grossed more than $171 million worldwide, Universal Studios placed Mr. Love in the back seat of the ride enjoyed by his six White costars,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Universal had apologized when the edited poster was first exposed, and Love says he was promised future \u201clucrative, career-making film roles\u201d that never materialized.<\/p>\n

The movie\u2019s lead actor Vaughn, 50, is accused of helping film bosses trying to placate Love at the time, with the lawsuit claiming that he \u201cwent so far as to tell Mr. Love that making a big deal about his removal from the poster would not be good for his career,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

Despite the promises, the doctored poster is still being used today, the lawsuit said, which Love tweeted<\/a> was the reason for him filing 11 years after the film\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

Love told Variety<\/a> that he is seeking redress on behalf of black actors who have been mistreated by the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have not only hurt me financially, they have hurt me in a deeper way by dismissing me because of my Blackness \u2014 and they have hurt all Black performers by continuing to perpetuate racism in the movie industry,\u201d Love said. \u201cI want to ensure that future generations don\u2019t have to endure the racism and whitewashing that I have experienced.\u201d<\/p>\n

The suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court accuses Universal of fraud, breach of contract, and violation of California\u2019s fair employment act and civil rights law.<\/p>\n

Universal declined to comment, Variety said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
