{"id":12149,"date":"2020-06-21T01:06:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-20T22:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nyc-teachers-segregated-by-race-for-affinity-groups-amid-protests\/"},"modified":"2020-06-21T01:06:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-20T22:06:00","slug":"nyc-teachers-segregated-by-race-for-affinity-groups-amid-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nyc-teachers-segregated-by-race-for-affinity-groups-amid-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"#NYC teachers segregated by race for \u2018affinity groups\u2019 amid protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NYC teachers segregated by race for \u2018affinity groups\u2019 amid protests<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        United we stand, divided we learn about racism.<\/p>\n<p>City school teachers are being segregated into discussion groups based on skin color, race and ethnicity in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s killing and weeks of sometimes violent protests \u2014 but some staffers believe the separation is as divisive as the racism they\u2019re trying to defeat.<\/p>\n<p>More than 700 employees have signed up for a June 23 \u201cAnti-racist Community Meeting\u201d sponsored by the Department of Education\u2019s Early Childhood Division.<\/p>\n<p>Each was given the option of joining a breakout discussion group. The choices included: \u201cblacks or African-American, Latinx, Middle Eastern and North African, multiracial or mixed, Native and Indigenous, Asian Pacific Islander American, White Allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White allies means those considered \u201canti-racist.\u201d No other ethnic groups are marked \u201callies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like we\u2019re not allowed to be white,\u201d a staffer said. \u201cYou begin to feel marginalized. Why do I have to state if I\u2019m an ally? If we\u2019re signing up for this workshop, they should assume we\u2019re allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza emailed educators on June 3, condemning police brutality, voicing solidarity with black employees and New Yorkers, and vowing to fight systemic racism \u201cincluding in our public school system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am asking you to continue to urge students and colleagues to safely express their experiences and opinions, and share their vision for a better world,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Chancellor Josh Wallach emailed an invitation for the June 23 event, which was first slated for June 19 \u2014 or Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery. He changed the date \u2014 with an embarrassed apology \u2014 after black staffers objected.<\/p>\n<p>Another meeting to wrestle with racial issues was held this month in Queens after an explosive June 4 anti-bias seminar for staffers of PS 307 in Corona, where 95 percent of students are Hispanic, and black and white kids comprise one percent each.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15867083\"><img alt=\"Josh Wallack, Deputy Chancellor of Early Childhood and Enrollment\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"664\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Josh Wallack, Deputy Chancellor of Early Childhood and Enrollment<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During that June 4 session, a black teacher lashed out at white and Hispanic colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about you, you white privileged teachers from Long Island? Why aren\u2019t you saying anything?\u201d fumed the educator, who also accused \u201cHispanic leaders\u201d of not standing up for the black community, a source recalled.<\/p>\n<p>The participant added, \u201cI have no ill will against [the black teacher]\u00a0 but the way it came out, \u2018Teachers who are white privileged on Long Island\u2019 \u2014 she doesn\u2019t know who I am. I didn\u2019t expect to be a target in my own building, among my own colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PS 307 Principal Cecilia Jackson, who is black, then told staffers they had to become \u201cinterrupters\u201d of racism, and if they were not on board to \u201cplease get out of my building.\u201d The room became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>The black teacher, who could not be reached for comment, later apologized in an \u201copen letter\u201d to her colleagues, obtained by The Post, noting her remarks came from \u201ca place of hurt, anger, anxiety, pain. She insisted she doesn\u2019t \u201chate or dislike any individuals from any race, religion, creed or color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am expressing black pain,\u201d the teacher wrote. \u201cThat does not equate to all white people being evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The principal then divided the staff into three groups based on race for a second meeting on June 9: Latino\/a\/x\/Hispanic; White\/Asian\/Other; and Black.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15867087\"><img alt=\"Matt Gonzales\" data- data- height=\"300\" width=\"300\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Matt Gonzales<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Justifying the racial groupings, she said it can be \u201cexploitative and emotionally taxing\u201d for people of color \u201cto educate privileged persons about their unearned privilege and the nature of marginalized person\u2019s oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some immigrant staffers were befuddled and asked where they belonged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of my colleagues are from Pakistan, from Turkey,\u00a0 from New Zealand \u2026 I heard the presenter could not give an answer,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p>Diversity advocates say \u201caffinity groups\u201d are an established tool that can be crucial to tackling racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere needs to be space for white people to talk about racism, and anti-black racism,\u201d said Matt Gonzales, a school integration advocate at NYU\u2019s Metropolitan Center and a member of Mayor De Blasio\u2019s School Diversity Advisory Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not enough to be, \u2018not racist.\u2019 That\u2019s just complicit.
