These are what many cinephiles might call the essential <strong>Werner Herzog<\/strong> films. For anyone who saw him for the first time as an actor in <em>The Mandalorian<\/em>,\u00a0were intrigued by him, learned he was also an acclaimed director, and are looking to dive into his filmography, those entries would be a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p>But if you ask the man himself, another film should be included in those ranks: 2009\u2019s\u00a0<em><strong>Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans<\/strong><\/em>, which stars <strong>Nicolas Cage<\/strong> as a corrupt, hallucinating police officer.\u00a0<span id=\"more-647408\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans<\/em>\u00a0was loosely inspired by Abel Ferrara\u2019s 1992 Harvey Keitel film <em>Bad Lieutenant<\/em>, but the only significant comparison point is that there\u2019s a corrupt cop at the center of the story. If you\u2019ve never seen the movie, well, you\u2019re in for a treat. Here\u2019s a small taste of a scene to whet your <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite, in which Cage hallucinates two iguanas during a sting operation and Herzog essentially stops the movie to give the iguanas several extreme close-ups:<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vv0aAv0lJ3s\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vv0aAv0lJ3s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget about the scene in which he chokes an old woman in a nursing home, threatens her nurse, and then nearly blows them both away with a giant handgun:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f27cck3Bl-Y\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f27cck3Bl-Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have such wonderful memories of making the film, and Nicolas Cage, what a phenomenal actor he is,\u201d Herzog told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/entertainment\/werner-herzog-nicolas-cage-bad-lieutenant-port-of-call-new-orleans\">Inverse<\/a> earlier this month. The movie was a financial bomb, but that doesn\u2019t seem to have affected the iconoclastic director\u2019s opinion of it \u2013 he literally called it \u201cone of my essential films,\u201d and seems to revel in the memory of making it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a conspiracy between the two of us,\u201d Herzog says, referencing Cage. \u201cHe said, \u2018I\u2019m not gonna sign my contract unless Werner Herzog is on board as a director,\u2019 and I said, \u2018I\u2019m not gonna say my contract unless Nicolas is on board.\u2019 And it was a wonderful collaboration.\u201d<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->It was so wonderful, in fact, that Herzog says he would reunite with Cage \u201cim<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely\u201d if he had a script that fit the actor\u2019s talents. \u201cIf I have a story where he would fit as leading character or maybe as an antagonist\u2026he\u2019s good in broken characters \u2014 well, you know what Nicolas Cage can do. But he\u2019s at his best, his finest performance ever, in my opinion, in\u00a0<em>Bad Lieutenant<\/em>. And if I have a story, I would not hesitate five seconds to call him up and invite him.
