\n A mysterious metal monolith that was recently discovered in the southern Utah desert has now disappeared, officials said Saturday.<\/p>\n

The ten-foot-high silver structure \u2014 which was installed illegally \u2014 was removed by an \u201cunknown party\u201d on Friday, the Bureau of Land Management said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The BLM said its employees did not remove the structure, which was on public lands but which was itself still considered to be \u201cprivate property.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not investigate crimes involving private property which are handled by the local sheriff\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Utah Department of Public Safety first discovered the monolith on Nov. 18.<\/p>\n

Crew members had been flying a helicopter over the desert to help the Utah Division of Wildlife Resource count bighorn sheep when they saw the odd structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it,\u201d pilot Bret Hutchings told KSL-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was like, \u2018Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!\u2019 And I was like, \u2018What.\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018There\u2019s this thing back there \u2013 we\u2019ve got to go look at it!’\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
