Windows finally has a more modern terminal environment including features like tabs, split panes, multiple session types, and settings that let you configure everything from keyboard shortcuts to animated GIF backgrounds.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finally_a_More_Modern_Terminal_For_Windows\"><\/span>Finally, a More Modern Terminal For Windows<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At Build 2020 on May 19, 2020, Microsoft announced that the new Windows Terminal was stable and \u201cready for enterprise use.\u201d Windows Terminal version 1.0 is here. It was originally announced at Build 2019, and Microsoft even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8gw0rXPMMPE\">prepared a flashy video to sell how awesome it is<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new Windows Terminal is packed with useful features. Features aside, the core of the console environment has been modernized.\u00a0Windows 10 has a built-in terminal environment that\u2019s all about backward compatibility, so these changes couldn\u2019t h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en to Windows 10\u2019s built-in console environment.<\/p>\n<p>With the new Windows Terminal, Microsoft was able to make changes like a more modern text layout and rendering engine with GPU acceleration and support for Unicode text\u2014you can even use emoji in the Terminal.\u00a0Copy and Paste \u201cjust work\u201d when you press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. There\u2019s even a new font, named <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/commandline\/cascadia-code\/\">Cascadia Code<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/p\/windows-terminal-preview\/9n0dx20hk701?activetab=pivot:overviewtab\">download the Windows Terminal from the Microsoft Store<\/a>. To open a new tab after launching the Terminal, just click the \u201c+\u201d button on the tab bar or press Ctrl+Shift+T.<\/p>\n<p>You can use familiar keyboard shortcuts to move through the tabs, like Ctrl+Tab to switch to the tab on the right and Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch to the tab on the left. But it supports many types of shell environments.\u00a0You can now have multiple types of shell environment in the same window.<\/p>\n<p>If you click the arrow to the right of the New Tab button, you\u2019ll see a list of sessions you can open: Windows PowerShell, Command Prompt, Linux distributions like Ubuntu (if you have them installed with the Windows Subsystem for Linux), and Microsoft\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/cloud-shell\/overview\">Azure Cloud Shell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With Windows 10\u2019s built-in SSH client, you can easily start SSH sessions from the Windows Terminal, too.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Split_Panes_for_Multiple_Shells_at_Once\"><\/span>Split Panes for Multiple Shells at Once<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-673828 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/3-split-panes.png.pagespeed.ce.ockAbSCnOJ.png\" alt=\"Using split panes in the Windows Terminal\" width=\"648\" height=\"342\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tabs are great, but what if you want to see multiple shell environments at once? That\u2019s where the Windows Terminal\u2019s Panes feature comes in.<\/p>\n<p>To create a new pane, press Alt+Shift+D. The Terminal will split the current pane into two and give you a second one. Click a pane to select it. You can click a pane and press Alt+Shift+D to keep splitting it.<\/p>\n<p>These panes are linked to tabs, so you can easily have several multi-pane environments in the same Windows Terminal window and switch between them from the tab bar.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other keyboard shortcuts for working with panes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create a new pane, splitting horizontally<\/strong>: Alt+Shift+- (Alt, Shift, and a minus sign)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create a new pane, splitting vertically<\/strong>: Alt+Shift++ (Alt, Shift, and a plus sign)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Move pane focus<\/strong>: Alt+Left, Alt+Right, Alt+Down, Alt+Up<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resize the focused pane<\/strong>: Alt+Shift+Left, Alt+Shift+Right,\u00a0Alt+Shift+Down,\u00a0Alt+Shift+Up<\/li>\n<li><strong>Close a pane<\/strong>: Ctrl+Shift+W<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are the default hotkeys, and you can change them if you like.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Better_Zooming\"><\/span>Better Zooming<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-673829 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/x4-zoom.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.9oFlQ3qcOg.png\" alt=\"Zoomed in text in the Windows Terminal.\" width=\"648\" height=\"246\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That new text-rendering system means smoother, better zooming. To zoom and enlarge or shrink the text in the terminal, hold Ctrl and rotate the mouse wheel.<\/p>\n<p>In Windows 10\u2019s built-in console environment, as seen in the standard PowerShell and Command Prompt windows, this will change the size of the text while also changing the size of the window. Hold Ctrl+Shift and scroll down with the mouse wheel to make the window increasingly translucent. The colors of your desktop background\u2014or whatever is behind the Terminal\u2014will peek through with a Windows \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/uwp\/design\/style\/acrylic\">Acrylic<\/a>\u201d style effect.<\/p>\n<p>This only works when the application is focused\u2014so, when you Alt+Tab away, the Terminal will have a solid background again until you Alt+Tab back.<\/p>\n<p>Practical or not, it\u2019s a feature Linux and Mac users have had for many years. To access them, click the down arrow to the right of the New Tab button and select \u201cSettings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll see a text-based JSON file full of options. As a developer tool, Windows Terminal currently makes you configure these options by modifying the text file rather than with a graphical interface.<\/p>\n<p>Available options you can change in the Settings.json file include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Configurable key bindings<\/strong>: You can bind keyboard shortcuts to actions or change the default keyboard shortcuts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Color schemes<\/strong>: Change the color scheme (theme) of the terminal environment. Here\u2019s a list of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/terminal\/customize-settings\/color-schemes\">included color schemes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Profiles<\/strong>: Create different profiles that will appear under the New Tab button. You can customize the command that\u2019s executed when you start the command-line environment and set custom fonts and color schemes for each session.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custom backgrounds<\/strong>: You can set a custom background image for a session. For example, you could change your Ubuntu session so that it had a Ubuntu-themed custom background image.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Animated GIF backgrounds<\/strong>: You can even set an animated GIF as your custom background.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Default profile selection<\/strong>: Choose the profile you want to launch by default when you launch Windows Terminal or click the New Tab button.
