\n Mayor David Dinkins was a \u201cfighter for what was right,\u201d who basked in the love of adoring citizens and helped usher in New York\u2019s next generation of leaders, local dignitaries recalled during a celebration of the late mayor\u2019s life in Harlem.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a whole generation in this city that got our start because of David Dinkins,\u201d Mayor de Blasio said from Al Sharpton\u2019s National Action Network headquarters in Upper Manhattan, at an event attended by former US Rep. Charles Rangel and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got a helping hand from David Dinkins. They got that word of encouragement. There\u2019s a generation of people who believed they could make a difference because they saw David Dinkins do it first. He has a human legacy you can feel right here in this room,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

Dinkins, the Big App<\/a>le\u2019s first black mayor who served during an era when the city was gripped by crime and racial strife, died Monday. He was 93.<\/p>\n

Dinkins was like a \u201cbrother,\u201d said Rangel, who noted the mayor\u2019s tendency for long conversations with constituents \u2014 and how proud he was to lead New York City.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was so sincere about loving people. So sincere that I just stopped going out publicly with him because of the time he would spend with people that really didn\u2019t like him \u2014 but loved him \u2014 and the time he would spend with children, I would never get a chance to get in a restaurant,\u201d Rangel quipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see in his heart that he enjoyed to be able to say he was the mayor of the City of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharpton touted Dinkins for inheriting a city that was \u201cbroke and divided,\u201d and addressing his enemies with \u201cgrace and dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have known him since I was 16, and David Dinkins was a fierce fighter<\/span>\u00a0for what was right, he had his own way of fighting,\u201d Sharpton said.<\/p>\n

De Blasio, who worked for the Dinkins administration, recalled Nelson Mandela\u2019s historic 1990 visit to City Hall and a Yankee Stadium rally for the South African leader as a \u201cbeautiful, powerful moment,\u201d and credited Dinkins for welcoming Mandela to the city just five months after he was freed from 27 years in prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was breathtaking,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cIt felt like . . . time stood still.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
