\n Joe Biden\u2019s campaign described as \u201coutrageous\u201d President Trump\u2019s comments during an Oklahoma political rally that the White House should slow down the amount of coronavirus testing to reduce the number of cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump just admitted that he\u2019s putting politics ahead of the safety and economic well-being of the American people \u2014 even as we just recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in almost two months and 20 million workers remain out of work,\u201d Kate Bedingfield, Biden\u2019s deputy campaign manager, said in a statement issued late Saturday.<\/p>\n

She said the president\u2019s remarks would linger \u201clong after tonight\u2019s debacle of a rally.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis virus has killed nearly 120,000 Americans and cost tens of millions their jobs, in large part because this president could not and would not mobilize testing as quickly as we needed it. To hear him say tonight that he has ordered testing slowed \u2014 a transparent attempt to make the numbers look better \u2014 is app<\/a>alling,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

About an hour before Bedingfield released the statement, Biden tweeted his response.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeed up the testing,\u201d the former vice president wrote.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a rally in Tulsa \u2013 his first since March \u2013 Trump said coronavirus testing is a \u201cdouble-edged sword\u201d because it increases the total number of cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have tested now 25 million people. It is probably 20 million people more than anybody else,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cHere\u2019s the bad part. When you test to that extent, you are going to find more people, find more cases. So I said to my people, \u2018Slow the testing down please.\u2019 They test and they test.\u201d<\/p>\n

A White House official later said Trump was just joking.<\/p>\n

Trump made the remark at the 19,000-set BOK Center in Tulsa during a reboot of his re-election campaign.<\/p>\n

But the rally didn\u2019t attract the crowds the campaign had anticipated and much of the arena\u2019s upper tier remained empty.<\/p>\n

The Trump campaign also canceled an appearance at an outdoor stage when crowds failed to show up.<\/p>\n

Campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh blamed the modest crowd on the ongoing nationwide protests and the media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly, protesters interfered with supporters, even blocking access to metal detectors, which prevented people from entering the rally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRadical protesters coupled with relentless onslaught from the media, attempted to frighten off the President\u2019s supporters,\u201d he added. \u201cWe are proud of the thousands who stuck it out.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
