(AbbVie)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>       In May 2019, two veteran money managers shared their philosophy with MarketWatch readers that investors shouldn\u2019t be overly focused on the highest dividend yields when selecting stocks for income. <\/p>\n<p> A new screen using the same criteria suggested by one of them now highlights five companies that make the cut. They are listed below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The original article featured comments from Mike Loewengart, who is now the managing director of investment strategy at E-Trade (which was acquired by Morgan Stanley in October) and Lewis Altfest, president of Altfest Personal Wealth Management, which manages about $1.4 billion for private clients in New York. Both were interviewed again for this article.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_total-return_focus\"><\/span>A total-return focus<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Loewengart believes that a good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach for income-seeking investors is to focus on total return rather than dividend yield. If you are invested in a fund that tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.24%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       such as the Vanguard 500 Index Fund<br \/>\n        VFIAX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201363336\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.25%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       or the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF<br \/>\n        SPY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209901640\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.27%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       your current yield is 1.60%. But if you go back 20 years, which factors in the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2000, along with the credit crisis, the 7.2% average annual return would leave a comfortable margin over your 5% annual withdrawal (income) rate.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, some investors will still want to select individual stocks for some of their portfolios.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2020_action_growth_and_value\"><\/span>2020 action, growth and value<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Loewengart wasn\u2019t surprised that the updated stock screen \u2014 a conservative value-oriented one \u2014 came up with a rather small set of companies, because \u201cequity markets have risen considerably.\u201d The S&amp;P 500 Index has advanced 11% this year, excluding dividends. Its current dividend yield of 1.60% is down from 1.79% a year ago, according to FactSet. The decline in the yield has been exacerbated by some dividend cutting and suspensions, as well as more conservative decision-making by many companies that have continued to raise payouts. <\/p>\n<p>Altfest said the stock-screening methodology below is still relevant, but \u201cthings have changed\u201d because growth stocks have performed so well. For example, Amazon.com Inc.<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.32%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       is up 68% this year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, given where stocks are, and the types of stocks, you\u2019re getting more of a play in value, because value does well when economies pick up steam. So that\u2019s where there\u2019s a target of interest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Loewengart agrees that \u201cvalue can be appropriate at this time,\u201d because of this year\u2019s outperformance in growth-oriented sectors. But he stressed that he was \u201cnot going to make any prediction\u201d of how well value or growth strategies might perform.<\/p>\n<p>As you see reports of record daily coronavirus case counts, it may be hard to consider value stocks for the eventual economic rebound. But with a reasonable hope for near-term deployment of vaccines from Pfizer Inc.<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and BioNTech SE<br \/>\n        BNTX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214419716\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.79%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Moderna Inc.<br \/>\n        MRNA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205619834\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+16.34%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and AstraZeneca PLC<br \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200304487\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.01%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       the U.S. may well be heading out of the pandemic economy in 2021. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe value players can do very well in that period,\u201d Altefest said. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Updated_stocks_screen\"><\/span>Updated stocks screen<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Altfest\u2019s suggested screen from May 2019 was to begin with a dividend yield of at least 3.00%, with growth of \u201cat least 4% to 5% a year in revenue and profit.\u201d He also suggested stocks with \u201clower volatility \u2014 in a beta of 1 or below.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> Beta is a measure of price volatility. If a stock has a beta of 1 when compared with the S&amp;P 500 Index,\u00a0for example, its price volatility for the selected period has matched that of the index. Lower beta means less price movement.<\/p>\n<p>For the updated stock screen, we began with the S&amp;P 500 and narrowed the list:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u2009Beta for the past 12 months of 1.00 or less, when compared with the price movement of the entire index: 21 companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u2009Dividend yield of at least 3.00%: 39 companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u2009Sales increases of at least 4% over the past 12 months. (In the original screen in May 2019, this parameter was 5%. This time around we are still in Altfest\u2019s range, but have made an allowance for the pandemic\u2019s disruption): eight companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u2009Sales per share increases of at least 4% over the past 12 months \u2014 a company may have diluted its shares by issuing more to raise money to weather a crisis, or to make acquisitions or for other corporate purposes. This may be because some investors don\u2019t wish to hold shares of a tobacco company (and ESG funds cannot do so). It may also mean investors have little confidence in the company\u2019s ability to maintain its dividend over the long term, if smoking continues to decline and alternative tobacco products don\u2019t make up the difference.<\/p>\n<p>This underscores how important it is for you to do your own research and form your own opinion about a company\u2019s long-term prospects before buying its shares.
