\n A tequila bar owner is trying to get around the UK\u2019s strict coronavirus restrictions by adding some holy to his spirits \u2014 and registering as a church.<\/p>\n

James Aspell, 34, posted photos of his formal application<\/a> to make his shuttered \u201c400 Rabbits Tequila and Mezcal Cocktail Bar\u201d in Nottingham an official place of meeting for religious worship.<\/p>\n

He was also shown smiling and giving the thumbs-up while mailing the form for the now-reverentially named Church of the Four Hundred Rabbits.<\/p>\n

To get approved, he now needs people to sign up and say they are part of his congregation \u2014 telling Nottinghamshire Live<\/a> that they can register as a \u201cbunny believer\u201d or \u201creverend of the righteous rabbits.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith places of worship allowed to open in all tiers we thought f\u2013k it let\u2019s start a religion!\u201d he explained on Facebook<\/a> to his new congregation, who would otherwise be barred under the UK\u2019s strict lockdown rules, which would only allow him to serve takeout if he sold food.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan\u2019t be that hard can it!\u201d he added, promising \u201cCongregation daily till late.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aspell told Nottinghamshire Live that while it started as a joke it \u201ccomes from a serious place\u201d at his anger over \u201cthe hypocrisy\u201d of strict lockdowns he thinks are unfairly hurting bars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis time of year it\u2019s usually all guns blazing but instead I\u2019m sat at home putting my Christmas decorations up,\u201d he complained of the popular bar he opened five years ago.<\/p>\n

He admits that even if his house of worship application got approved, he would likely not be allowed to serve booze. Instead, Aspell hopes \u201cto adapt in a different way and have some fun with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not doing this to offend anybody or break any rules,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Judging by social media for his bar \u2014 sorry, church \u2014 he has an eager congregation waiting to sip his holy water.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only reason I\u2019d take up a religion. I\u2019m in!\u201d Leigh Harrison replied to his post, while Rebecca Barker said, \u201cI want to worship at the church of mezcal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only religion I would get on board with,\u201d Ken Scott said, offering \u201chopes and prayers for your salvation and delicious drinks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might just save 2020,\u201d George Maroda Phillips told Aspell, while Terry James Hayfield suggested the tequila bar would be \u201ca spiritual place of healing for sure.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
