“#Laverne Cox & Her Friend Assaulted By Transphobic Attacker At A Los Angeles Park
\n<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\nLaverne Cox<\/strong> is speaking up about experiencing a disturbing hate crime.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the actress went on Instagram Live<\/strong> to detail an event that left her \u201cin shock\u201d and \u201csuper triggered.\u201d While on a social<\/a>ly distanced walk with a friend in Los Angeles\u2019s Griffith Park, the pair were app<\/a>roached by a man who \u201caggressively\u201d asked for the time.<\/p>\n

She shared:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe friend that I\u2019m with looks at his watch and tells him the time, and then the guy who asked for the time says to my friend: \u2018Guy or girl?\u2019 My friend says, \u2018F**k off.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Laverne, who had kept walking, described the \u201csplit second\u201d escalation when \u201call of a sudden, the guy [was] attacking my friend.\u201d She continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cI look back and I\u2019m like\u2026 \u2018What is happening?\u2019 The guy is like hitting my friend, and then my friend is going toward him and I\u2019m like \u2018Holy s**t!\u2019 And I pull out my phone and I call 911 \u2014 to dial 911, and all of a sudden it\u2019s over and the guy is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Orange Is The New Black<\/em> star was clearly still processing the event that she said \u201cjust happened\u201d right before she got home and began recording the Live. Luckily, her friend was able to \u201cde-escalate\u201d and both were okay after the attack. However, she reflected:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not safe in the world. And I don\u2019t like to think about that a lot, but it\u2019s the truth. It\u2019s the truth and it\u2019s not safe if you\u2019re a trans person. Obviously, I know this well. Yeah, It\u2019s just really sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In retrospect, she said:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friend thinks the guy really wanted me to answer so that he could spook whether I\u2019m trans or not. I don\u2019t know why, I don\u2019t know why it matters. At the end of the day, it\u2019s like, who cares? I\u2019m in a hoodie and yoga pants, I\u2019m like, completely covered up, I\u2019ve got my mask on \u2014 who cares if I\u2019m trans? Who cares? How does this affect your life? \u2026 This dude was looking for trouble. Looking for trouble because I happen to be a trans person in public.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Getting emotional, she expressed gratitude for her safety and for her friend protecting her. But she noted:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter who you are. You can be Laverne Cox, you know, like, whatever that means. If you\u2019re trans \u2026 you\u2019re going to experience stuff like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On why she decided to share the story, she explained:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important for me to remind myself, and remind you, that when these things happen, it\u2019s not your fault. It\u2019s not your fault that people are not cool with you existing in the world. \u2026 We have a right to walk in the park.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What an awful thing to experience, and a sad reminder of what our trans friends continue to endure every day. We all need to work on making this world safer for EVERYONE.<\/p>\n
