Hugh Grant<\/strong> has found his new niche playing the baddie. After shedding his rom-com leading man persona to play the flamboyant villain in\u00a0Paddington 2<\/em>\u00a0(in what is arguably his best role to date), Grant is digging deeper into the dark roles that are being offered him, recently coming off playing the sociopathic antagonist of David E. Kelley\u2019s HBO series<\/a>,\u00a0The Undone<\/em>. And he\u2019s got one more under his belt, the actor teased, revealing that his next project will be a \u201cmockumentary about 2020\u201d from\u00a0Black Mirror<\/em> creator\u00a0Charlie Brooker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Vulture<\/a> discussing the finale of\u00a0The Undone<\/em>, Grant revealed that he already has his next gig lined up. And interestingly, it\u2019s in keeping with his dive into the more unseemly roles since he\u2019s made a hard left turn from romantic leading man to scene-stealing villain. Grant told the outlet that he will star in Charlie Brooker\u2019s \u201cmockumentary about 2020\u201d as a \u201chistorian who\u2019s being interviewed about the year\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m doing a thing tomorrow, actually. Charlie Brooker [the creator of\u00a0Black Mirror<\/em>] has written a mockumentary about 2020. It\u2019s for Netflix, and I am a historian who\u2019s being interviewed about the year. I\u2019m pretty repellent, actually! And you\u2019ll like my wig.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is all kinds of intriguing. Brooker is a very cynical writer who is undoubtedly capable of crafting any manner of despicable characters for Grant to play, and it seems to be something that the actor is reveling in \u2014 describing his character as \u201crepellent\u201d and donning a (probably ridiculous) wig to play it. Brooker\u2019s work in\u00a0Black Mirror<\/em>, a sci-fi anthology series that is deeply suspicious of technology<\/a>, suggests that this mockumentary will be a comedy of the blackest degree, which will allow Grant to be as over-the-top as he wishes. And since this project is under Netflix \u2014 which Brooker has formed a close partnership with since moving\u00a0Black Mirror<\/em> over to the streamer \u2014 it will likely be star-studded and big-budgeted too.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no official confirmation about Brooker\u2019s Netflix mockumentary yet apart from Grant\u2019s tease, but it will likely be under the deal<\/a> that Brooker and Annabel Jones\u2019 production company have with the streamer.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure I want a Brooker mockumentary about 2020 (the year isn\u2019t bad enough that we need one of the TV industry\u2019s most famous cynics to turn it into a comedy?), but I\u2019m all for Grant doubling down on the villainous roles after giving an all-time performances in\u00a0Paddington 2<\/em> and continuing the streak in scene-stealing roles in\u00a0The Gentlemen<\/em> and now\u00a0The Undone<\/em>.<\/p>\n
