{"id":123662,"date":"2020-11-30T23:21:28","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T20:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/millions-of-workers-weeks-away-from-losing-paid-covid-leave\/"},"modified":"2020-11-30T23:21:28","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T20:21:28","slug":"millions-of-workers-weeks-away-from-losing-paid-covid-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/millions-of-workers-weeks-away-from-losing-paid-covid-leave\/","title":{"rendered":"#Millions of workers weeks away from losing paid COVID leave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Millions of workers weeks away from losing paid COVID leave<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/GettyImages-1227714761.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        Nearly 90 million workers could be just a month away from losing access to paid leave programs that helped slow the coronavirus\u2019 spread, a new report says.<\/p>\n<p>The Families First Coronavirus Response Act \u2014 which Congress passed in March in the early stages of the pandemic \u2014 required most employers to give workers up to two weeks of sick days at full pay if they came down with COVID-19 symptoms, plus up to 12 weeks of leave at two-thirds pay to care for sick loved ones or children whose schools were closed.<\/p>\n<p>Those programs are due to expire at the end of December, meaning up to 87 million public- and private-sector workers \u2014 or roughly half the nation\u2019s workforce \u2014 will lose those benefits at a time when infections are spiking across the country, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/11\/29\/millions-of-workers-lose-paid-leave-coronavirus-440793\">Politico reported<\/a> Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the programs fear their abrupt end could make the virus\u2019s latest surge even more dangerous unless Congress extends them \u2014 an unlikely prospect given the stubborn stalemate in Washington, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you tell a worker, \u2018Don\u2019t come to work when you\u2019re sick so you don\u2019t spread COVID, but you\u2019re not going to get paid and your family\u2019s not going to eat and you\u2019re not going to pay your rent,\u2019 you\u2019re asking too much of them,\u201d Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO labor union, told Politico.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say the policies had a tangible public health benefit \u2014 states where workers gained access to paid leave under the Families First bill saw about 400 fewer coronavirus cases per day, according to an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1377\/hlthaff.2020.00863\">October study<\/a> from Cornell University and the Swiss Economic Institute.<\/p>\n<p>But conservatives reportedly contend that maintaining the broad paid leave mandate may not work well for employers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to give employers an incentive and we need to make it affordable for them to be able to provide these programs to their workers,\u201d Elizabeth Hanke, an economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, told Politico.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
