Each one is comprised of strings of amino acids that fold into countless elaborate shapes that determine what they do.<\/p>\n<p>Predicting these structures can help us\u00a0understand how proteins cause diseases \u2014 and develop drugs to treat them. But scientists currently know the exact 3D shapes of just a fraction of the 200 million-plus proteins they\u2019ve\u00a0identified.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:\u00a0How to build a search engine for criminal data]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Figuring out a protein\u2019s precise form is typically a time-consuming and expensive process. But DeepMind says its AlphaFold system can predict their structures in a matter of days.<\/p>\n<p>DeepMind tested its performance at the Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP) competition,\u00a0<span>a biannual experiment in predicting the 3D structure of proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The London-based lab had won the 2018 edition of the\u00a0challenge, but its predictions\u00a0lacked the accuracy required to be biologically useful. This year, DeepMind revamped the system.<\/p>\n<p>The latest version of AlphaFold uses a\u00a0<span>neural network system to identify<\/span><span>\u00a0the structure of a folded protein as a \u201cspatial graph,\u201d where\u00a0residues are the nodes and edges connect the residues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The system was trained on around 170,000 protein structures from the Protein Data Bank, and uses a relatively modest amount of computing power \u2014\u00a0roughly equivalent to 100-200 GPUs run over a few weeks.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AlphaFold: The making of a scientific breakthrough\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gg7WjuFs8F4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nIn <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/predictioncenter.org\/casp14\/zscores_final.cgi\">results<\/a>\u00a0from the latest CASP assessment released on Monday, two-thirds of the system\u2019s predictions matched the accuracy of lab experiments, with an average margin of error comparable to the width of an atom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis computational work represents a stunning advance on the protein-folding problem, a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology,\u201d said Professor Venki Ramakrishnan, the winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. \u201cIt has occurred decades before many people in the field would have predicted. It will be exciting to see the many ways in which it will fundamentally change biological research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeepMind is already exploring the possibilities. The company <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/blog\/article\/alphafold-a-solution-to-a-50-year-old-grand-challenge-in-biology\">says<\/a> it\u2019s investigating how protein structure predictions could deepen our understanding of specific diseases, and believes they could be useful in future pandemic responses. In time, they could help find enzymes that break down plastic waste and even capture carbon from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There\u2019s still a long way to go before the scientific breakthrough is translated into real-world impacts.
