“#Hellraiser Rights Return to Creator Clive Barker \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a surprisingly busy year for\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em><\/strong> news<\/a> (perhaps because we\u2019re all trapp<\/a>ed in hell). There\u2019s a\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> TV series<\/a> in the works at HBO, with\u00a0Halloween<\/em> director David Gordon Green at the helm. And then there\u2019s a\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> reboot from filmmaker David Bruckner (The Night House<\/em>). And now here\u2019s perhaps the biggest\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> news of all: the American rights to the franchise are now back in the hands of original creator Clive Barker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Clive Barker has had next to nothing to do with the\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> franchise since\u00a0Hellbound: Hellraiser II<\/em> in 1988, but that\u2019s about to change. Per THR, a lawsuit settlement has resulted in the U.S. franchise rights to\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> to revert back to Barker on\u00a0December 19, 2021. As THR<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n

Under the termination provisions of the Copyright Act of 1976, authors may recapture rights from publishers after waiting a\u00a0prescribed period (usually 35 years for newer works) and sending a notice within a five-year window. Baker did so, but met resistance from\u00a0Larry Kuppin, the producer who had once purchased New World Pictures from Roger Corman\u2026\u00a0but the parties have come to a deal. The judge has now been presented with a proposed consent judgment that states that Barker will recapture U.S. rights on December 19, 2021.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That means that after December 19, 2021, anyone who wants to make yet\u00a0another<\/em> sequel to\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> will need to get Barker\u2019s approval. This is fairly big news since there has been an endless supply of subpar direct-to-video\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> sequels over the years. That\u2019s not to say there won\u2019t\u00a0still<\/em> be mediocre\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> sequels, but at the very least, they\u2019ll have Barker\u2019s blessing.<\/p>\n

This news comes on the heels of two other developments regarding\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em>. There\u2019s a\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> TV series being developed for HBO, and it was recently announced that Barker had come aboard as an executive producer on that project, with Barker saying he was \u201cdelighted the Hellraiser mythology is seeing a new life. It\u2019s time the stories went back to their roots. I\u2019m eager to bring to a new audience the most powerful and ancient elements of horror: the darkest evil invading our human lives and how we must find in ourselves the power to resist it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s a\u00a0Hellraiser<\/em> reboot. David Bruckner is directing a script from\u00a0Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It\u2019s unclear where that project stands at the moment \u2013 Barker wasn\u2019t listed as attached to the reboot in any capacity before, and if the film isn\u2019t made by December of next year, he\u2019s going to need to sign off on it. Hopefully, we\u2019ll learn more about that soon.<\/p>\n
