big El Corte Ingl\u00e9s department store to watch giant, singing puppets.<\/p>\n<p> The store\u2019s \u201cCortylandia\u201d show has treated festive crowds in the past to depictions of Gulliver\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a>s, Noah\u2019s Ark and Aladdin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kBS3flHl_Go\" class=\"icon none\">among many others<\/a>. But this year, as all the world battles a killer virus, the tradition has been replaced with a light display that simply reads: \u201cMerry Christmas.\u201d  <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetDynamic\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetDynamic\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dynamic-inset-container article__inset__dynamic\">\n<style>\n        iframe.twitter-tweet {\n            width: 100% !important;\n        }\n    <\/style>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mandrilar\/status\/1329754273362505728\"><\/a>\n        <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>    <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       The loss of a beloved 15-minute puppet show is among traditions in the traditionally Catholic country being altered or even eliminated, as the government tries to stay a step ahead of its physically demonstrative people, and a virus that has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/en\/geographical-distribution-2019-ncov-cases\" class=\"icon none\">killed 45,069<\/a> to date here. <\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s lengthy holiday season lasts roughly a month \u2014 a marathon of family and friend gatherings \u2014 ending on Jan. 6, with the Feast of the Three Kings, which is traditionally the biggest gift-giving day in the country. On Jan. 5, families line city towns and streets all over the country to watch the Kings\u2019 Day parade, whose roots date to the 1800s. But that crowning glory of the season has already been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sede.madrid.es\/csvfiles\/UnidadesDescentralizadas\/UDCBOAM\/Contenidos\/Boletin\/2020\/Octubre\/Ficheros%20PDF\/BOAM_8752_19102020142947781.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">canceled or switched to virtual<\/a> in many places.  <\/p>\n<p>The local government in Madrid, a region that has been hit hardest by both waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, recently embarked on a dour holiday information campaign, with messages such as: \u201cFamily gatherings without protection could bury your grandmother,\u201d or \u201cBreaking the rules could put your best friend in intensive care.\u201d   <\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetDynamic\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetDynamic\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dynamic-inset-container article__inset__dynamic\">\n<style>\n        iframe.twitter-tweet {\n            width: 100% !important;\n        }\n    <\/style>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n        <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ComunidadMadrid\/status\/1328309812455731201\"><\/a>\n        <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>    <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       That is as the past weekend saw crowds pour into Madrid\u2019s center to shop and look at festive lights, as police used barricades and overhead cameras to reduce crowds. Officials have mostly relied on midnight curfews, six-person limits on gatherings, and regional border closures to counter an autumn surge, with schools open throughout and masks mandatory since summer. One possible plan being mulled is 1 a.m. curfews for Christmas and New Year\u2019s Eves, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/society\/2020-11-24\/spanish-government-proposes-limiting-christmas-meetings-to-six-people-1am-curfew-on-new-years-eve.html\" class=\"icon none\">and perhaps an urging against nonessential travel.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Announcing a vaccination plan that will start in early 2021 and involve six major pharmaceutical companies, Spain\u2019s health minister Salvador Illa Roca <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sanidadgob\/status\/1331954016138502145\" class=\"icon none\">recently implored <\/a>a weary population to hang in there. \u201cWe understand that everyone is now a little tired of so many months with big restrictions and losses, but\u2026we cannot let our guard down now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>And there has been some good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>. As of Monday, Spain\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mscbs.gob.es\/profesionales\/saludPublica\/ccayes\/alertasActual\/nCov\/documentos\/Actualizacion_261_COVID-19.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">14-day cumulative number<\/a> of cases per 100,000 population stood at 275.51, inching toward levels not seen in more than a month. But while it seems many in the U.S. were blindsided by a warning not to travel at Thanksgiving, holiday expectations appear low here.<\/p>\n<p>Hair stylist David Henry Lesur Depret, who runs <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/davidkunzle.com\/\" class=\"icon none\">two hair salons<\/a> in Madrid with his partner Atilio K\u00fcnzle, is planning on a small Christmas in a year that has seen an intense focus on staying well and keeping his businesses going. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Long lines and plenty of limitations on the other side of Spain\u2019s pandemic experience <\/p>\n<p>That is as the year may end on a quieter than usual note, because of the dampening effect the virus will have on what is normally a busy holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to stay in Madrid in the house with one friend and that\u2019s it. I don\u2019t want to travel or bring people here,\u201d and that includes a brother in France, he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to worry about it, so he\u2019s not coming and\u2026he will be alone, but at least he will be safe.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>With such huge uncertainty about what will be possible, it is virtually impossible to plan right now, says Ana Ramos. If we are four in the house, well, we are four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ramos holds just threads of hope about seeing her parents in Burgos, located in the northern community of Castille and Le\u00f3n, currently a highly infected region in Spain with the strictest restrictions. \u201cThey can\u2019t leave and we can\u2019t enter and this worries me because I would love to see them for the holidays.
