Matthew Morrison\u2019s impressive theatrical resume didn\u2019t quite prepare him for his funky wardrobe in \u201cDr. Seuss\u2019 The Grinch Musical!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely the weirdest outfit I\u2019ve ever worn,\u201d says Morrison, 42, who plays the titular role in NBC\u2019s telecast, airing Dec. 9 from 8 to 10 p.m. \u201cAt one point I turned to [co-star] Booboo [Stewart] and said, \u2018This is probably the closest we\u2019re ever going to get to working at a theme<\/a> park.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, in a lot of ways, the Grinch is not comfortable in his own skin \u2014 so that helped.\u201d<\/p>\n

NBC\u2019s version of the iconic Dr. Seuss book \u201cHow the Grinch Stole Christmas!\u201d was filmed over two days at the Troubadour Theatre in northwest London (Wembley) \u2014 following a month of rehearsals \u2014 and utilized supporting talent from London\u2019s renowned West End theatre district. It followed stringent COVID protocols (including testing) so that Morrison et al. could interact on the stage once filming began with a social<\/a>ly distanced camera crew and stagehands. <\/p>\n

In addition to Morrison and Stewart \u2014 who plays the young version of the Grinch\u2019s dog, Max \u2014 \u201cDr. Seuss\u2019 The Grinch Musical!\u201d also stars Denis O\u2019Hare as the older version of Max and newcomer Amelia Minto as Cindy Lou-Who.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt follows the book, but the biggest change in this retelling is that Max speaks, so he has a much bigger role,\u201d says Morrison. \u201cDenis, who plays the old Max, is the narrator of the story, harkening beack to when he lived with the Grinch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morrison says it took roughly three-and-a-half hours to don the iconic Grinch makeup and suit. <\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have to wear it all that much \u2014 I was probably in the makeup and suit five times in all,\u201d he says. \u201cIn this particular show, the Grinch and his dog are kind of in their own show and everyone else in Who-ville is in their own show [and] there are only a few times where we intermingle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most difficult number for me was \u2018One of a Kind,’\u201d he says. \u201d It was challenging to dance in that big suit and to find the body language of the Grinch, who doesn\u2019t walk upright but slouches, since he\u2019s more curmudgeonly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morrison, who memorably played Will Scheuster in Fox\u2019s musical dramedy series<\/a> \u201cGlee,\u201d says that filming the NBC telecast in a real theater, as opposed to a soundstage, further enhanced the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done a lot of live theater \u2014 the energy of a live performance can\u2019t be beat, and I feel like we really had that here,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was a bit counter-intuitive to what I love about rehearsing theatrical productions, since we were all wearing masks and were six feet apart and the moment when I hug little Cindy Lou-Who I couldn\u2019t actually hug her. It was the strangest rehearsal process.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut once the masks came off and we did our final COVID tests and could be in the same sandbox it was beautiful, because I didn\u2019t get to see everyone\u2019s facial expressions [in rehearsals] so I was seeing them for the first time \u2014 and, in that sense, it felt very live.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, Morrison says, there was another aspect to his accepting the role of the Grinch.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne reason I wanted to do this is because I love the theater community so much and it\u2019s hurting right now.\u201d he says. \u201cPeople have an opportunity to get that live theatrical experience from their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a story about isolation and loneliness \u2014 something we\u2019re all going through right now.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
