\n An NYPD officer who was caught on camera putting a suspect in an illegal chokehold on Sunday was suspended without pay hours later, authorities said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a swift investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau, a police officer involved in a disturbing app<\/a>arent chokehold incident in Queens has been suspended without pay,\u201d Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a statement Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile a full investigation is still underway, there is no question in my mind that this immediate action is necessary,\u201d Shea added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to transparency as this process continues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shea did not name the suspended officer in his statement.<\/p>\n

Video circulating on social media earlier on Sunday showed four officers pressing a man in a D\u2019Angelo Russell Nets jersey to the ground on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway.<\/p>\n

The 29-second clip shows one of the cops with his arm around the man\u2019s neck, as three other officers attempt to handcuff him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYo stop choking him bro!\u201d someone off-screen yells, as the man on the ground goes limp.<\/p>\n

But the cop only lets go of the man\u2019s neck after one of his fellow officers taps him on the back, the footage shows.<\/p>\n

At least a dozen people protested the arrest in front of the 100th Precinct on Sunday afternoon, carrying \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d signs, video\u00a0posted on Twitter showed.<\/p>\n

The New York City Council\u00a0earlier this month passed legislation that made it a criminal offense for cops to use chokeholds.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
