Why was the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge closed Monday? The answer is blowing in the wind.<\/p>\n

Eerie viral video posted on TikTok<\/a> Tuesday shows the span\u2019s empty upper level heaving up and down, and making a sound like a loud groan as wild winds blasted the Big App<\/a>le.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad is an electrician and this is the video he sends me from the Verrazano Bridge yesterday during the storm,\u201d wrote Tiffany Buccheri, who posted the clip.<\/p>\n

MTA bridge officials closed the upper level of the Brooklyn-to-Staten Island span for much of Monday as the New York region saw wind speeds as high as 60 miles per hour. The lower level was also closed for about 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

The TikTok video was accompanied by the caption: \u201cIf you didn\u2019t have a fear of bridges already\u2026 well\u2026 you do now.\u201d<\/p>\n

But an MTA spokesman said the clip showed the 56-year-old bridge behaving exactly as designed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuspension bridges \u2013 particularly the longest span in North America \u2013 are engineered to be flexible and any movements on the bridge were within its safety standards,\u201d MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said in a statement.<\/p>\n
