\n Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams on Sunday addressed the skyrocketing use of illegal fireworks in the city \u2014 and urged New Yorkers not to report the blasts so as to avoid \u201cheavy-handed policing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of calling 311 or 911, neighbors should \u201cgo talk to the young people or the people on your block who are using fireworks\u201d and warn them of the dangers, Adams said at a press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cStopping fireworks cannot turn into fireworks between\u00a0the police and the community,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want a good community response to dealing with a nuisance,\u201d he continued. \u201cThis is a nonviolent act. So those three numbers that we all dial, 911, get over that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cday to day\u201d stopping of illegal firecrackers should come from community members or groups, such as violence-prevention outreach organization Cure Violence, Adams said.<\/p>\n

Police should instead focus on stopping the flow of pyrotechnics coming into the Big App<\/a>le or to confiscate large quantities, the borough president continued.<\/p>\n

Anti-cop protesters in the community \u201ccan\u2019t have it both ways\u201d when it comes to calling authorities to report fireworks, Adams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have left the place of 911 being the response for everything in our city. Now we have to stop talking the talk, and walk the walk,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does community policing look like? It\u2019s the extension of everyday residents engaging with people when there are nonviolent acts taking place in the city,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Parents should also be warning their children about the dangers of fireworks, Adams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are real dangerous instruments, you could lose an arm, you could lose an eye, you could lose your life and parents need to know \u2026 your children should not be playing with this.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
