Actor Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played the villain in the original \u201cMad Max\u201d film and a sequel 36 years later, has died. He was 73.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am sad to report that our friend Hugh Keays-Byrne passed away in hospital yesterday,\u201d filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith, a friend and collaborator of Keays-Byrne\u2019s, wrote on Facebook<\/a> Wednesday. <\/p>\n

Born in Kashmir, India, in 1947, Keays-Byrne moved to Britain as a child and entered the world of acting in his 20s, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1968, the Wrap reported<\/a>. He played small parts in a series<\/a> of films throughout the 1970s \u2014 including \u201cStone,\u201d \u201cMad Dog Morgan\u201d and \u201cThe Trespassers\u201d \u2014 before scoring a leading role in the 1978 TV film \u201cThe Death Train.\u201d The following year, he had his breakout role playing the evil Toecutter in Mel Gibson\u2019s \u201cMax Max.\u201d The low-budget flick quickly garnered a cult following, spawning the wildly successful franchise it has grown into today. <\/p>\n

After \u201cMad Max,\u201d Keays-Byrne continued playing smaller roles on TV until his next big break, in 2007<\/a>, when he was offered the role of another \u201cMad Max\u201d villain: Immortan Joe in 2015\u2019s \u201cFury Road.\u201d <\/p>\n

While the world may remember Keays-Byrne for depicting the embodiment of evil, Trenchard-Smith wrote he, in fact, had \u201ca generous heart, offering a helping hand to people in need,\u201d and exhibited an \u201cinnate sense of humor.\u201d <\/p>\n

In the pair\u2019s 46 years of friendship, the two spent \u201cmany happ<\/a>y Sunday mornings\u201d at the house Keays-Byrne shared with his partner, Christina, and a crew of \u201cfellow actors and artists.\u201d <\/p>\n

He was \u201can absolutely wonderful human who fought very hard for environmental and humanitarian issues,\u201d wrote writer Ted Geoghegan of Keays-Byrne on Twitter<\/a>, calling him \u201can unsung hero of Aussie cinema.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHe cared about social justice and preserving the environment long before these issues became fashionable,\u201d Trenchard-Smith added on Facebook<\/a>. \u201cHis life was governed by his sense of the oneness of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
