Unilever, based in the UK, and Dutch-Italian candymaker Perfetti van Melle round out the global report, titled \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BFFP-2020-Brand-Audit-Report.pdf\">BRANDED Vol III: Demanding Corporate Accountability for Plastic Pollution<\/a>,\u201d with US-based brands dominating the list. <\/p>\n<p>The annual audit is made possible by concerned citizens from around the globe who volunteer to collect, count and record litter in their communities. In 2020, 14,734 participants in 55 countries found 346,494 pieces of plastic waste that didn\u2019t make it to a trashcan or landfill; 63% of the refuse gathered still had a clearly marked label or logo and were added to the brand survey. In all, 5,000 brands from around the world were cataloged. <\/p>\n<p>Coke was the most wasteful by far, accounting for 13,834 pieces of plastic last year across 51 countries. In second place, PepsiCo contributed 5,155 pieces throughout 43 countries; Nestl\u00e9 claimed 8,633 hunks of plastic \u2014 more than Pepsi, but across fewer countries at 37.<\/p>\n<p>Abigail Aguilar, a campaign coordinator for Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said this year\u2019s analysis was \u201cnot surprising\u201d in a statement <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/2020\/12\/02\/top-plastic-polluters-of-2020\/\">on BreakFreeFromPlastic.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" alt=\"infographic\" class=\"wp-image-16721443 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/break-free-plastic-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/break-free-plastic-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/break-free-plastic-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/break-free-plastic-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/break-free-plastic-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">breakfreefromplastic.org<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThese companies claim to be addressing the plastic crisis yet they continue to invest in false solutions while teaming up with oil companies to produce even more plastic,\u201d she said. \u201cTo stop this mess and combat climate change, multinationals like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestl\u00e9 must end their addiction to single-use plastic packaging and move away from fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BFFP authors cited a recent report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN Environment Program regarding progress made towards the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newplasticseconomy.org\/assets\/doc\/Global-Commitment-2020-Progress-Report.pdf\">New Plastics Economy Global Commitment<\/a>, which pledged to eliminate \u201cvirgin\u201d plastics by 2025. They found the more than 250 businesses involved in the agreement \u2014 including the aforementioned brands \u2014 had reduced their consumption of single-use plastics by only 0.1% between 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world\u2019s top polluting corporations claim to be working hard to solve plastic pollution, but instead they are continuing to pump out harmful single-use plastic packaging,\u201d said BFFP campaign coordinator Emma Priestland. \u201cWe need to stop plastic production, phase out single-use and implement robust, standardized reuse systems.
