For those who thought sugarplums only came in fairy form, it will be a surprise to see Dunkin\u2019s latest seasonal coffee flavor actually plays on a traditional English treat.<\/p>\n

The centuries-old dessert probably originated as a way to preserve plums and other fruits in candy form by boiling with sugar, according to historians<\/a>. Since then, the term \u201csugarplum\u201d has been used to describe any fruit, sugar and sometimes also nut-based confection. <\/p>\n

For \u201cAmerica\u2019s No. 1 doughnut chain,\u201d the sugarplum concept has been reimagined into an iced espresso and milk beverage with \u201cbright berry flavors of blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and plum,\u201d an over-the-top press release hypes<\/a>, plus a lavender hue to match. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur Sugarplum Macchiato is a colorful twist on a well-known, but perhaps mysterious-tasting, flavor of holiday lore,\u201d said Jill Nelson, the brand\u2019s VP of marketing strategy. \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect complement to our fan-favorite holiday latte lineup and brings even more delicious cheer to the Dunkin\u2019 menu.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunkin\u2019 reps added that the sugarplum idea has been dancing in their heads since 2016: \u201cDancing around the culinary lab, re-enacting ballet moves from \u2018The Nutcracker\u2019 was an integral part of the development process.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also suggest pairing their purple drink with their new dressed-up holiday doughnut, featuring \u201cfrosted snowflake\u201d sprinkles and a vibrant violet icing, all the better to \u201ccreate a little festive FOMO as the highlight of holiday posts and photos.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
