The retailer plans to use up to 300 of Starship\u2019s robots in the UK by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The robots in Northampton will serve around 5,000 households with contactless deliveries from the\u00a0Co-op\u00a0food store in Wootton Fields initially. The delivery devices will <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> up to three miles from the shop, with bookings made through the Starship Food Delivery <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The battery-powered robots use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to travel on pavements and navigate around any obstacles. Computer vision-based navigation helps the robots to map their environment to the nearest inch.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:\u00a0<span dir=\"auto\">How to build a search engine for criminal data<\/span>]<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Delivery_boom\"><\/span>Delivery boom<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like many other retailers, Co-op\u00a0has ramped up its online offer to meet demand, particularly during the pandemic. It aims to offer online home delivery and click and collect, through its own site and with partners, at over 1,000 stores by the end of this year. This is up from the 650 it had originally planned.<\/p>\n<p>The company says it sees its stores as \u201cmicro-distribution hubs,\u201d with orders picked from local\u00a0Co-op\u00a0stores so high street stores benefit from any increase in online demand.<\/p>\n<p>Starship Technologies\u2019 robots have completed over 500,000 commercial autonomous deliveries in local neighborhoods and university campuses across five countries, traveling over one million autonomous miles in total, the company said. A statement added that delivery numbers for\u00a0Co-op\u00a0products have tripled in Milton Keynes during the Covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rules_of_the_pavement\"><\/span>Rules of the pavement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A Starship spokesperson told<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Cities Today<\/em>: \u201cThe\u00a0pandemic has accelerated our growth, and we\u2019ll be expanding into new towns and cities soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They said that where their services run: \u201cWe have agreements in place with local\u00a0governments to operate our robots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robot deliveries are also being piloted elsewhere. In July,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cities-today.com\/atlanta-and-franklin-pilot-amazons-delivery-robots\/\">Amazon announced<\/a>\u00a0trials of its electric, autonomous Scout package delivery robots in Atlanta, Georgia, and Franklin, Tennessee, adding to services in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.aboutamazon.com\/transportation\/meet-scout\">Snohomish County<\/a>, Washington, and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.aboutamazon.com\/transportation\/whats-next-for-amazon-scout\">Irvine<\/a>, California. For most cities, though, this is still an\u00a0emerging area, and with street and pavement space at a premium, leaders will be keen to avoid the disruption seen around the world in the early days of micromobility.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Eric Stuckey, City Administrator, City of Franklin,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cities-today.com\/atlanta-and-franklin-pilot-amazons-delivery-robots\/\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>told\u00a0<em>Cities Today<\/em><\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>that the Amazon pilot would start small and allow the city to \u201cgo to school\u201d and learn what regulations might work best if the system were to be scaled up.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, San Francisco, which was a front-runner for these services,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/dec\/10\/san-francisco-delivery-robots-laws#:~:text=Robot%20permits%20will%20be%20capped,human%20chaperone%20at%20all%20times.\">passed regulations<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to govern the use of delivery robots after complaints from some residents.
