If you recently upgraded to an Apple Silicon Mac and you\u2019ve downloaded or transferred apps from an older machine, you might want to see which apps are optimized for Apple Silicon and which are Intel apps running under the Rosetta translation layer. Here\u2019s how to check.<\/p>\n

Tip:<\/strong> If you\u2019re thinking about buying an M1 Mac, here\u2019s\u00a0how to check whether your Mac\u2019s apps are compatible before you make the purchase.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

First, click the Apple logo menu in the upper-left corner of your screen and select \u201cAbout This Mac.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the window that appears, click the \u201cSystem Report\u201d button on the Overview tab.<\/p>\n

In the System Information window, select Software > Applications in the sidebar menu.<\/p>\n

You will then see a list of all the applications installed on your Mac. Focus on the \u201cKind\u201d column. If an application is optimized for Apple Silicon, you\u2019ll see \u201cApple Silicon\u201d listed beside it in that column.<\/p>\n

You can even click the \u201cKind\u201d column header and sort all of your apps by architecture support so that all of the \u201cApple Silicon\u201d apps will be listed together.<\/p>\n

If an app isn\u2019t optimized for Apple Silicon, the \u201cKind\u201d column will read \u201cIntel.\u201d In that case, when you run the app, it will execute through Apple\u2019s Rosetta 2 translation layer.<\/p>\n

If your favorite app isn\u2019t Apple Silicon optimized yet, don\u2019t fret. Apple\u2019s first Apple Silicon Macs, which feature in the M1 chip, will give developers a platform to port their applications to the new Mac architecture. If the app still receives regular updates, chances are that the developer will support Apple Silicon very soon, so keep an eye out for updates. Good luck!<\/p>\n
