{"id":125923,"date":"2020-12-03T22:34:58","date_gmt":"2020-12-03T19:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/microsoft-patents-software-that-detects-lazy-employees\/"},"modified":"2020-12-03T22:34:58","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T19:34:58","slug":"microsoft-patents-software-that-detects-lazy-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/microsoft-patents-software-that-detects-lazy-employees\/","title":{"rendered":"#Microsoft patents software that detects lazy employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Microsoft patents software that detects lazy employees<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/microsoft-work-from-home-technology-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As if workers weren\u2019t self-conscious enough during a video conference. <\/p>\n<p>United States Patent and Trademark Office <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/appft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;d=PG01&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;s1=%2220200358627%22.PGNR.&amp;OS=DN\/20200358627&amp;RS=DN\/20200358627\">records indicate<\/a> that Microsoft is staking claim over novel software that allows employers to monitor staffers\u2019 body language and facial expressions during virtual and in-person meetings, and delivers a numeric \u201cproductivity score,\u201d topping out at 800, for companies overall.  <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> garnered little buzz during Microsoft\u2019s Ignite conference in October, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rachelsandler\/2020\/11\/25\/microsofts-new-productivity-score-lets-your-boss-monitor-how-often-you-use-email-and-attend-video-meetings\/?sh=a9adc4c1a464\">Forbes reported<\/a> last week. Since then, security experts have had a chance to take a deeper look at Productivity Score.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s horrendous,\u201d said right-to-privacy researcher J.S. Nelson, associate professor of law at Villanova University. \u201cWhy are they monitoring people this way and what is that telling people about the relationship they should have with their employers in the workplace? What message are you sending?\u201d he told Forbes.<\/p>\n<p>The software essentially taps office computers to give managers access to an overview of companywide activity: what devices employees are using; how many meetings they\u2019re attending on Microsoft Teams, and how many hours they spend on the Microsoft Office suite or Skype. To some extent, emails are also subject to scrutiny, and live or virtual meetings are subject to monitoring for body language, facial expressions and meeting engagement (as opposed to looking down at your smartphone).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quality parameters each quantify meeting conditions during one or more previously elapsed meetings and are usable to determine an overall quality score for each of the one or more previously elapsed meetings,\u201d the wordy patent filing stated, adding that a \u201cquality monitoring device\u201d may record \u201cthe body language and\/or facial expressions of meeting participants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis type of employee surveillance software obstructs diversity in workplaces by operating on the false premise that there is a uniform, normative way that people work optimally,\u201d Silkie Carlo, director of UK civil liberties group Big Brother Watch, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-55133141\">told the BBC<\/a>. \u201cA lot of surveillance tech is marketed as \u2018innovative\u2019 but in reality is astoundingly retrograde.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an October <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2020\/10\/29\/power-your-digital-transformation-with-insights-from-microsoft-productivity-score\/\">blog post<\/a>, the computer giant denied that Productivity Score is invasive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me be clear: Productivity Score is not a work monitoring tool,\u201d wrote Microsoft 365 Corporate Vice President Jared Spataro. \u201cProductivity Score is about discovering new ways of working, providing your people with great collaboration and technology experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Forbes, Melissa Grant, Microsoft 365 Product Marketing Director, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rachelsandler\/2020\/11\/25\/microsofts-new-productivity-score-lets-your-boss-monitor-how-often-you-use-email-and-attend-video-meetings\/\">reiterated<\/a> that the tool couldn\u2019t be used to track an individual employee\u2019s <em>every<\/em> move. Rather, it delivers an aggregate of data, which also dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears monthly. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the numbers on something doesn\u2019t mean you have any idea what\u2019s going on with your employees,\u201d she said.
