The question didn\u2019t have time to exit the reporter\u2019s lips before Saquon Barkley answered it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny doubt in your mind that you\u2019re going to be the same player?\u2019\u2019 the Giants 23-year-old star running back, who\u2019s rehabbing from surgery to repair the torn ACL in his right knee, was asked.<\/p>\n

Barkley\u2019s response began as soon as he heard the words \u201cany doubt\u2019\u2019 in the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo doubt in my mind,\u2019\u2019 he said with a distinguishable trace of defiance in his tone. \u201cI know that I\u2019m going to be able to come out and be a better player. That\u2019s what I\u2019m going to challenge myself with.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Barkley, whose knee was mangled on a run the first play of the second quarter against the Bears on Sept. 20, revealed on a Zoom call with reporters \u2014 the first time he\u2019s spoken publicly since the injury \u2014 that he\u2019s experienced some \u201cdark\u2019\u2019 moments while injured and away from his teammates as well as \u201ctears\u2019\u2019 when the injury first occurred.<\/p>\n

But he sounded resolute about the direction of his recovery and what he\u2019ll look like when he comes out the other side of this.<\/p>\n

Barkley said \u201ca lot of people reached out\u2019\u2019 to him since the injury, including one particularly relevant person: Adrian Peterson.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone who\u2019s really important to me would be \u2018AP,\u2019 \u2019\u2019 Barkley said of the Hall of Fame-bound running back who now plays with the Lions.<\/p>\n

Peterson famously tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee on Dec. 24, 2011 and \u2014 even more famously \u2014 led the NFL in rushing yardage (2,097) and carries (348) in 2012 and was voted the league\u2019s MVP.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, when you hear this injury, the first person that comes to your mind is the season that \u2018AP\u2019 had,\u2019\u2019 Barkley said. \u201cHe put me in contact with his trainer, [and] I was able to ask him a lot of questions. Also, I think the day before surgery, I got to chat with \u2018AP\u2019 for a very long time. I could see myself continuing to chat with him throughout.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Peterson, speaking to Detroit reporters right before Barkley\u2019s surgery, said he offered some \u201cadvice\u2019\u2019 that centered around \u201cjust wrapp<\/a>ing your mind around the situation for what it is, just accepting it and focusing on the plan to get better and to come back and be better than you were before.<\/p>\n
