More than 40 US states are planning to bring an antitrust lawsuit against Facebook next week, a new report says.<\/p>\n

The coalition of states \u2014 led by New York \u2014 is preparing the suit as the social media giant faces a similar probe by the Federal Trade Commission, Reuters reported Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not yet clear what the states\u2019 complaint will include, according to the news<\/a> agency. But Facebook has faced recent scrutiny for snapp<\/a>ing up smaller rivals such as Instagram and WhatsApp to bolster its own business.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s reportedly a focus of the investigation by the FTC, which could file a related lawsuit against Facebook in a federal court or with an administrative law judge, Reuters says.<\/p>\n

New York Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James confirmed<\/a> in September 2019 that she was spearheading a bipartisan group of states investigating Facebook for antitrust issues. The Democratic AG said at the time that officials would work to determine whether Facebook \u201cendangered consumer data, reduced the quality of consumers\u2019 choices, or increased the price of advertising.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesman for James declined to comment Thursday. Facebook did not immediately\u00a0respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

The states\u2019 reported suit would come on the heels of the US Justice Department\u2019s antitrust case against Google for allegedly maintaining \u201cunlawful monopolies\u201d in its search and advertising businesses. Google has called the feds\u2019 October lawsuit \u201cdeeply flawed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Facebook shares were down about 1 percent at $284.57 as of 10:56 a.m. Thursday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
