{"id":12628,"date":"2020-06-22T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T12:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/diversity-vp-apologizes-for-snapchats-controversial-juneteenth-filter\/"},"modified":"2020-06-22T15:33:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T12:33:00","slug":"diversity-vp-apologizes-for-snapchats-controversial-juneteenth-filter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/diversity-vp-apologizes-for-snapchats-controversial-juneteenth-filter\/","title":{"rendered":"#Diversity VP apologizes for Snapchat\u2019s controversial Juneteenth filter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Diversity VP apologizes for Snapchat\u2019s controversial Juneteenth filter<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        June 22, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 8:33am         <\/p>\n<div>\n                        An executive from Snapchat\u2019s parent company apologized for a controversial Juneteenth filter that slipped through the company\u2019s review processes despite input from black employees.<\/p>\n<p>Oona King, the vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion of Snap, shot down allegations that the company launched the filter asking users to smile to \u201cbreak the chains of slavery\u201d without consulting any black staffers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mischaracterization on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> \u2014 that White executives at a tech company failed, yet again, to include Black perspectives \u2014 is completely untrue,\u201d King, who is black, told employees in a Saturday letter. \u201cWhat is true is that regardless of our diverse backgrounds, we are all human, and humans make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>King said black employees were \u201cfully involved\u201d in creating and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roving the filter but admitted that Snap officials failed to realize how it might offend people on a holiday marking black Americans\u2019 liberation from slavery. Snapchat pulled the filter and apologized after it sparked a backlash Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis mistake has taught us a valuable lesson, and I am sincerely sorry that it came at the expense of what we meant to be a respectful commemoration of this important day,\u201d King said in the letter, which was published by The Verge. A Snap spokesperson confirmed its authenticity to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Snap is still looking into where the idea for the so-called \u201cLens\u201d originated, the company spokesperson said. But black staffers were among those who suggested using smiling to \u201ctrigger\u201d the effect while two white employees questioned whether it was appropriate, according to King.<\/p>\n<p>King\u2019s team reviewed the filter \u201cfrom the standpoint of Black creative content\u201d but failed to consider how it would look when used by people who were not black, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel it is perfectly acceptable as black people to celebrate the end of slavery \u2014 as we do with picnics, BBQs, street parties and other forms of celebration across America \u2014 and say \u2018Smile! Happy Juneteenth; we\u2019re no longer enslaved! But we\u2019re not yet really free either!&#8217;\u201d King wrote. \u201cHowever for a White person to tell a Black person: \u2018Smile! You\u2019re no longer slaves\u2019 is offensive in the extreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other Silicon Valley giants, Snap has never released a report on the diversity of its workforce.
