“#New York City Ballet brings holiday magic with ‘Nutcracker’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Joy to the twirl! If the coronavirus has wreaked havoc on your holidays, fear not \u2014 here\u2019s a beloved Christmastime tradition you can enjoy from the comfort of your couch. <\/p>\n

A New York City Ballet soloist has teamed up with Sotheby\u2019s to produce a dazzling short film version of the beloved ballet \u201cThe Nutcracker.\u201d Featuring original choreography performed by two NYCB dancers, the festive performance airs Friday on the auction house\u2019s Web site and social<\/a>-media channels. It kicks off the Christmas season, as well as Sotheby\u2019s Festival of Wonder<\/a> luxury series<\/a>, by making use of some of the sale\u2019s most exquisite jewels and watches.<\/p>\n

Peter Walker, who choreographed and directed the piece, told The Post that he was happ<\/a>y to provide some \u201cartistic relief from this crazy time\u201d to viewers who have been pummeled by the pandemic. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe New York City Ballet\u2019s \u2018The Nutcracker\u2019 is synonymous with the holiday season in New York, and it\u2019s a holiday tradition for many many New Yorkers,\u201d said Walker, 28. <\/p>\n

Indeed, in a more typical December, the esteemed dance corps would be performing George Balanchine\u2019s classic vision of the story \u2014 in which a young girl accompanies her nutcracker prince to a magical land filled with delicacies \u2014 daily for rapt audiences. This year, NYCB has canceled all live performances, although \u201cNutcracker\u201d nuts can stream a recording<\/a> from the 2019 season starting Friday, Dec. 11, for $25. <\/p>\n

Walker, who has been dancing since the age of 9, said his version is different in more ways than one.<\/p>\n

For one thing, it was all done over Zoom. Walker said he worked with the two performers \u2014 NYCB soloist Sebastian Villarini-Velez and Corps de Ballet member India Bradley \u2014 remotely, for safety reasons. \u201cWe didn\u2019t rehearse in person for this at all until the day of [filming],\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also going to sound a little different. The dance is set to to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky\u2019s iconic \u201cWaltz of the Flowers,\u201d which is normally in the second act of the ballet. But here, it\u2019s been remixed into a novel, urban-techno soundtrack. <\/p>\n

Finally, they\u2019ve traded the gilded Lincoln Center stage for a diamond-studded Sotheby\u2019s gallery. \u201cJust taking the energy of that remixed music and the familiarity of \u2018The Nutcracker\u2019 and combining those things with the beautiful space that is the galleries at Sotheby\u2019s really makes the whole production visually stunning,\u201d Walker said. <\/p>\n

Although Walker is looking forward to a time when dancers can delight audiences in person again, he also said he hopes virtual performances become a permanent part of ballet\u2019s new normal.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that in the future we find some sort of a middle ground,\u201d he said. \u201cThis digital component \u2026 makes ballet more visible and more accessible to a younger and larger audience.\u201d<\/p>\n
