But in the early 2000s, the thought of audiences getting not one, but multiple superhero <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> each year was unthinkable, and a superhero movie that connected to a larger world of other heroes was but a mere wishful thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except Disney did all that years before the Avengers first assembled, with an unassuming, family-friendly superhero movie that poked fun at expanded universes, superhero legacies, and every trope in the book. With the film having celebrated its 15th anniversary earlier this year and finally becoming available on Disney+, it\u2019s time to take the \u201chero or sidekick\u201d test and revisit <\/span><b><i>Sky High<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Pitch\"><\/span><b>The Pitch<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a high school for superpowered kids \u2014 had reportedly been around since the \u201990s when Paul Hernandez pitched it as a TV series. But it wasn\u2019t until Disney found success with their animated show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Possible <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and show co-creators Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle began writing a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a> for a live-action adaptation that Disney decided to mix both concepts and bring Schooley and McCorkle on board to make <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel more contemporary and teen-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came out at a time when superhero movies were experiencing a boom. Between the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-Men, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superhero films were taking a more grounded approach to comics, movies without the more \u201ccomicbook-y\u201d elements like spandex suits or Lazarus Pits. The success of Nolan\u2019s groundbreaking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Begins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a month earlier showed audiences were craving this new style of dark, brooding, and grounded superhero film, and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went the exact opposite direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/entertainment\/sky-high-2-sequel-aquaman-spoof-interview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inverse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, writer Mark McCorkle credited director Mike Mitchell with wanting to honor the more colorful spirit of superhero comicbooks. \u201cMike had a vision of bright colors and it being friendly and upbeat,\u201d McCorkle said, and that was certainly a bit of a difficult thing to ask audiences to get on board with, at least at the time. Though obviously not a blockbuster film like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fully embraced the camp and cheerfulness of comic books.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the cast, Disney hired up-and-coming actors for the main teen roles, like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Danielle Panabaker and Michael Angarano. For the supporting cast, the studio looked for a mix of both co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>ns and genre legends like Kevin McDonald, Dave Foley, Kurt Russell, Bruce Campbell, and even Lynda Carter, with the former Wonder Woman playing the school principal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Movie\"><\/span><b>The Movie<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does differently, and does well, is hinting at a more expansive world than what we see on screen. Literally, the first line in the film is \u201cin a world full of superheroes\u2026\u201d and the film lives up to that concept. Even if it doesn\u2019t have the budget to show other locations, or have sequels that expand the story, the characters feel like part of a larger world full of dozens of different heroes. Likewise, this expansive world has been around for long enough that there are elite superhero lineages stretching back across decades, and a big focus of the film is how this legacy creates impossible expectations for super children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In part due to budget limitations and focus on being a coming-of-age story, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hones in on the day-to-day life of superheroes in a way that few movies do. Sure, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mystery Men <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Incredibles <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touch on this, but it\u2019s mostly a plot point rather than the entire concept. And in retrospect, seeing a film that takes the time to show where a Captain America\/Superman-type superhero hangs his cape and how he interacts with his family feels fresh at a time where superhero movies only get bigger and bigger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way that this film evokes newer trends in superhero movies is its tongue-in-cheek humor that pokes fun at the entire concept of superheroes. Where M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbreakable <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had to introduce comic book tropes and concepts to audiences, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assumes its audience is familiar not with the comic books, but at least with the popular adaptations. There are jokes at the expense of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TV show from the \u201960s, and broader concepts like sidekicks or acquiring powers via radioactive insect bite.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Legacy\"><\/span><b>The Legacy<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching this movie in 2020, it\u2019s amazing to see the kind of talent the film managed to gather in one place. While its supporting cast was already more than well-known by 2005, its young core cast was not, and two of them ended up returning to the superhero genre \u2014 Mary Elizabeth Winstead playing Huntress in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birds of Prey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Danielle Panabaker portraying Killer Frost in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Flash<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he had already worked with Disney and the superhero genre with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Incredibles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">composer Michael Giacchino\u2019s career has grown exponentially since working on this film, scoring everything from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctor Strange<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Trek <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 --><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been talks about a possible sequel to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for years, with director Mike Mitchell telling <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/io9.gizmodo.com\/the-unrealized-sky-high-sequel-could-have-been-called-s-1832054122\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">io9 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that they\u2019ve already written material for a sequel titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save U <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 for \u201cSave University.\u201d Though it didn\u2019t happen at the time, having <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sky High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available on Disney Plus will surely bring the film to a whole new audience that\u2019s craving for new superhero content while waiting for the next Marvel movie.
