Shane Johnson says he\u2019s surprised \u2014 and happ<\/a>y \u2014 that he was able to continue playing US Attorney Cooper Saxe in \u201cPower Book II: Ghost,\u201d the role he originated on \u201cPower.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was done for when Tommy [Joseph Sikora] put a plastic bag over my head,\u201d says Johnson, 44. \u201cUsually [showrunner] Courtney [A. Kemp] gives you a heads-up before you die \u2026 so I was reading the script and thinking, \u2018Did she forget to give me a heads-up?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I feel like I\u2019ve managed to strike a very important chord within the \u2018Power\u2019 universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPower Book II: Ghost,\u201d continues the story of Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.), who, in \u201cPower,\u201d murdered his father, James St. \u201cGhost\u201d Patrick (Omari Hardwick) \u2014 but it\u2019s his mother, Tasha (Naturi Naughton), who\u2019s on trial for the murder. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really excited for my character this season since it\u2019s been like seven years in the making,\u201d says Johnson, who originated the role of Cooper Saxe when \u201cPower\u201d premiered in 2014. \u201cSo to get to this point \u2014 and the fact that I\u2019m still around and still finding places to go with the character and new challenges \u2014 I feel like I\u2019ve found some dynamic changes in Saxe over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s really due to the writers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson has a few thoughts on the direction in which he\u2019d like to see this season\u2019s plotline head.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an audience member I would want Tasha to go to jail because she is responsible for this universe,\u201d he says. \u201cIn Season 1, she told her husband, Ghost, that \u2018You\u2019re gonna be the biggest drug dealer in New York City.\u2019 She was that person. And then a few seasons later she\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, I want to go legit\u2019 and that Ghost should take responsibility because he\u2019s the one who did all the illegal stuff.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow she wants to turn over a new leaf, but it\u2019s kind of too late,\u201d he says. \u201cShe already made these choices \u2014 and she\u2019s responsible for some of the deaths. But as a parent, I fee like she\u2019s responsible for her kid to a degree \u2014 his upbringing and molding him\u2026so she\u2019s directly responsible for Tariq being who he is and who he needs to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Cooper Saxe I want to see Tariq in jail because he\u2019s the one that killed his father,\u201d he says. \u201cJames Saint Patrick was the real person I wanted in jail but I can\u2019t have him anymore because Tariq killed him. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe took my biggest case away from me so now I wanna take him down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saxe is also using his niece, Riley Saxe (Andrea Lee Christensen) for insider leverage while she\u2019s dating Tariq\u2019s college roommate.<\/p>\n

\u201cRiley could definitely be Cooper\u2019s downfall because she hasn\u2019t listened to
anything he says. He keeps trying to trust her and tell what to do but she\u2019s buried in her phone \u2014 a typical millennial.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s just half paying attention and wants to please [Cooper] \u2026but ends up getting him in trouble,\u201d he says. \u201cHe keeps trying to trust her and tell her what to do but

\u201cI think they\u2019re loyal to each other but she has bad instincts \u2014 instead of listening to her uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPower Book II: Ghost\u201d airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on Starz.<\/em>\n <\/div>\n
