US\u00a0cannabis\u00a0sales hit record levels over the Thanksgiving weekend, prompting industry predictions the combination of COVID-19 anxiety and a trend toward legalization has triggered a permanent uplift in demand.<\/p>\n

After years of sluggish official sales, buying soared in early March and April when lockdowns began and consumers, fearing supply disruptions, stockpiled the drug.<\/p>\n

Though many expected the initial surge to fade, monthly sales have kept hitting records.<\/p>\n

One of the top\u00a0cannabis\u00a0data aggregator and research companies Akerna said sales on Green Wednesday, as the eve of Thanksgiving is known, climbed by 80 percent above the daily average this year, hitting an all-time one-day record.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s calculations, based on data collected from its partner dispensaries in 19 US states and adjusted to project the full market, show total\u00a0cannabis\u00a0sales of around $238 million during the Thanksgiving weekend, nearly 14 percent above last year.<\/p>\n

By keeping people at home, limiting their entertainment options and adding to stress, the pandemic has helped to drive demand for\u00a0cannabis\u00a0for much of the year.<\/p>\n

Four in 10 users increased their overall consumption and more than half said they turned to\u00a0cannabis\u00a0to improve mental health, an advance copy of a report by research firm New Frontier Data, which is to be published next week, showed.<\/p>\n

Even if COVID-19 vaccines can bring back a degree of normality, insiders and observers say 2020 is likely to mark a watershed for the\u00a0cannabis\u00a0industry, as for many other sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shutdowns created a real \u2018come to Jesus\u2019 moment for a lot of stakeholders,\u201d Avis Bulbulyan, chief executive of\u00a0cannabis\u00a0consultancy Siva Enterprises, said. \u201cConsumer acceptance went through the roof.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, operators upgraded their plans and attracted mainstream investors that before showed little interest in the nascent industry.<\/p>\n

Further legitimacy came from the decision of state regulators to designate\u00a0cannabis\u00a0retailers as \u201cessential business\u201d during lockdowns, and, in the US elections on Nov. 3, initiatives to legalize recreational or medical marijuana<\/a>, which five states put on the ballot, sailed through.<\/p>\n

Thirty-five states allow medical marijuana use, some with restrictions, and 15 states, plus the District of Columbia, have legalized its recreational use.<\/p>\n

Opposition persists, however, with some groups saying it causes addiction and that not enough research has been carried out to prove medical benefits.<\/p>\n

The states of Idaho and Nebraska have bans in force. Activists in favor of\u00a0cannabis\u00a0are seeking a vote to try to overturn them in 2022 midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Stuart Titus, an early\u00a0cannabis\u00a0investor and CEO of Medical Marijuana, says 2021 could be the year when\u00a0cannabis\u00a0becomes as readily available as alcohol and tobacco.<\/p>\n

\u201cShortly in restaurants, consumers will have the choice of an alcoholic beverage or a\u00a0cannabis-based beverage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Marijuana remains illegal under federal law, which has limited the industry\u2019s access to banking services and funding.<\/p>\n

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has promised to change that, and decriminalizing weed is part of the Democrats\u2019 platform.<\/p>\n

Industry insiders acknowledge it may take years for any changes to make their way through the legislative process, but shifts in sentiment are moving more quickly.<\/p>\n

A Gallup poll in November showed support for marijuana legalization had reached 68 percent support, the highest level yet and up from 66 percent last year.<\/p>\n

At the same time, a separate Gallup poll found 70 percent of US adults consider smoking marijuana to be \u201cmorally acceptable,\u201d a 5-point rise in a year.<\/p>\n

Solid majorities for legalization in traditionally conservative states, such as North and South Dakota or Missouri, could also help to win over Republican lawmakers and local politicians, Steve Allen, chief executive of Californian producer The Parent Company, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith many Republican Senators now representing states that have passed\u00a0cannabis\u00a0legalization measures by wide margins, we will likely see increased support from Republicans for federal\u00a0cannabis\u00a0reforms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Akerna CEO Jessica Billingsley said her company has received a record number of research requests from state governments, which have lost tax revenues to business closures during the pandemic and are looking for new sources of income.<\/p>\n

\u201cLawmakers see\u00a0cannabis\u00a0legalization as a great way to shore up their balance sheets and provide jobs during this time of economic uncertainty,\u201d she told Reuters.<\/p>\n

The experience in Canada could yet serve as a cautionary tale.<\/p>\n

It became the first major nation to legalize recreational weed in 2018, but industry hopes were dashed by oversupply, black markets and lack of profitability.<\/p>\n

Producers and research firms say the United States is better placed to succeed because of the vast size of the potential market, new products and greater awareness of the therapeutic benefits of\u00a0cannabis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat used to be a \u2018recreational drug\u2019 is being better understood to be a complex compound with a long list of potential benefits for both the mind and body,\u201d The Parent Company\u2019s Allan said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
