Levine also urges work-rule reforms, ending or suspending nonessential city contracts, refinancing debt at lower interest rates and other measures \u2014 but \u201cany new taxes will be detrimental to the city\u2019s comeback.\u201d In past crises, city officials \u201cbit the bullet\u201d and relied on such strategies. It left the city \u201cstronger, better and healthier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education beat: It\u2019s No Time To Scrap Tests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Congress likely to grant Secretary Betsy DeVos\u2019 request to defer National Assessment of Educational Progress tests for at least a year, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fordhaminstitute.org\/national\/commentary\/naep-goes-awol\">Chester E. Finn Jr. at the Fordham Institute worries<\/a> that a vital tool will be \u201cAWOL for the pandemic and its school shutdowns, turning a blind eye to the learning losses that they\u2019re causing.\u201d It\u2019s reasonable to delay the tests, which are \u201cuseless\u201d without a valid sample, but states should not pause other assessments \u201ceven when Uncle Sam wimps out.\u201d Without some form of data collection to measure growth, \u201cwe\u2019ll see both a collapse, perhaps permanently, of results-based school accountability and \u2014 more importantly \u2014 an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>alling dearth of information about who is and isn\u2019t learning what during these challenging times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conservative: Only Students Can Fix Colleges<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mania that swept Haverford College\u201d after the death of Walter Wallace Jr., including a student strike, \u201clays bare, with unusual clarity, the fervid atmosphere of grievance and self-entitlement that has made the administration of elite colleges\u201d so difficult, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/quillette.com\/2020\/12\/01\/race-and-social-panic-at-haverford-a-case-study-in-educational-dysfunction\/\">writes Quillette\u2019s Jonathan Kay<\/a>. Student activists unleashed \u201csoaring rhetoric about the survival of \u2018lives, minds, and bodies\u2019 and a strike that\u2019s \u2018generations in the making,\u2019\u2009\u201d though their demands were \u201csprinkled liberally with details that remind us that these students live very privileged lives.\u201d As the strike escalated, administrators gave in quickly, realizing \u201cthe best problems to have are the ones you solve with money.\u201d Clearly the \u201ccrisis on American campuses can\u2019t be solved by administrators\u201d but only the \u201cstudents themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture critic: How \u2018The Crown\u2019 Cheats Thatcher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fans of \u201cThe Crown\u201d eagerly awaited the move of \u201cthe story of the royal family and British politics into the 1980s,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/12\/04\/the-crown-demonizes-thatcher-for-displaying-the-queens-applauded-stiff-upper-lip\/\">notes Jonathan Tobin at The Federalist<\/a>, but conservatives dreaded it, suspecting creator Peter Morgan would \u201ctrash the reputation of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.\u201d Indeed, the Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> portrays \u201cThatcher as a rigid ideologue\u201d lacking \u201cempathy for the suffering of the British people.\u201d And it gives \u201cshort shrift\u201d to her policies, which \u201cultimately shook Britain out of its postwar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ist lethargy and [led] to its rebirth as a dynamic economic power.\u201d Empathy \u201ccouldn\u2019t fix Charles and Diana\u2019s problems any more than it\u201d could let Britain \u201covercome the toll that decades of the dead hand of socialism had taken on its economy and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Libertarian: The Danger in Censoring History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an act of self-censoring condescension,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2020\/12\/04\/philip-guston-now\/\">snaps Reason\u2019s Ronald \u00adBailey<\/a>, the National Gallery of Art and three other leading galleries postponed \u201ca major retrospective exhibition of the works of American artist Philip Guston,\u201d because they included depictions of Ku Klux Klan figures. \u201cCurators feared their audiences would not be sophisticated enough to perceive and appreciate the manifestly anti-racist intent of the artist\u2019s works.\u201d Pushback against the decision \u2014 \u201cwhich pretended that suppressing imagery that reminds us of sinister truths can somehow eradicate historical evils\u201d \u2014 was swift: \u201cThe people who run our great institutions . . . lack faith in the intelligence of their audience,\u201d railed 100 prominent artists of various racial backgrounds in an open letter.
