The nurses braced themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a very precocious child,\u201d Grate, the unit\u2019s former nursing director, told The Post. \u201cHe was really kind of challenging and when Princess Diana picked him up, I thought, \u2018Oh my gosh, I hope you don\u2019t act out!\u2019 We were all holding our breath, but he put his head on her shoulder. As the new season of \u201cThe Crown\u201d on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80025678\">Netflix<\/a> tells it, the trip was an escape from her marriage to Prince Charles \u2014 and the infidelities being committed by both of them.<\/p>\n<p>But the only thing she was focused on that day was meeting the children. Sadly, said Grate, now 82 and a minister in East Stroudsburg, Pa.: \u201cMost of the kids that were there at that time, they\u2019re no longer with us. It was just really heartbreaking. There was so much misinformation about AIDS that people believed: You couldn\u2019t touch a doorknob or sit on a toilet or you would get it,\u201d said Gwen Elliot-McIntosh, who was an administrator at Harlem Hospital and ran a program for women, infants and children. \u201cPeople thought you had to shun people who had AIDS. It was a very bad time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grate agreed: \u201cPeople were so afraid to go into the children\u2019s room. We had to encourage the housekeepers to go in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diana, however, \u201cpicked up a baby and looked at the baby like there was no one else in the room .\u2009.\u2009. She talked to [the children] and hugged them. She gave them love,\u201d said McIntosh, now 72.<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>The royal had started her fight against AIDS stigma in 1987 when she declined to wear gloves while shaking the hands of ill patients at Middlesex Hospital in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, it was as if she was saying, \u2018If I can love these little children .\u2009.\u2009. it\u2019s OK \u2014 you can, too,\u201d recalled McIntosh, who retired in 2002.During the trip, Diana was joined by her chief of staff Patrick Jephson, as well as a press secretary and a \u00adlady-in-waiting. <\/p>\n<p>They checked into the H\u00f4tel Plaza Ath\u00e9n\u00e9e on the Upper East Side, where the duplex penthouse became her suite of choice when she was in town.<\/p>\n<p>Jephson recalled in his book \u201cShadows of a Princess\u201d how Diana\u2019s team was worried about her meeting the hospital\u2019s pediatrics director, Dr. Margaret Heagerty \u2014 \u201can avowed and outspoken critic of British policy in Ulster .\u2009.\u2009. Headlines swam before my eyes: \u2018Princess snubbed by Republican Granny\u2019 or \u2018Republican Doc wrecks tour.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>But all went fine, with Diana quizzing the doctor on the issues of drugs and AIDS. As Jephson writes, the doctor replied: \u201c[Drug users] are irresponsible .\u2009.\u2009. but we have seen women on drugs with AIDS sit by their dying children and mourn .\u2009.\u2009. They love their children as you love your little princes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Diana never returned before her 1997 death in a Paris car accident, her visit still looms large. \u201cI met Barbara Bush, Maria Cuomo,\u201d said Grate. \u201cDiana is the only one who exuded so much compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lulu King, now 89, was Harlem Hospital\u2019s recreation director. \u201cI looked into [Diana\u2019s] eyes and she became a glass figurine. She was so still and so beautiful.
