It\u2019s time to get euphoric again.\u00a0Sort of.<\/p>\n

HBO teen drama \u201cEuphoria\u201d has returned with the first of two specials, this one in time for the holidays \u2014 though the mood is more melancholy than merry.<\/p>\n

\u201cEuphoria\u201d ended its first season in August, and Season 2 has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. (It\u2019s scheduled to begin filming in 2021 but no premiere date has been announced.)<\/p>\n

The first special, titled \u201cPart 1: Rue,\u201d premiered Friday on HBO Max and will hit regular HBO Sunday at 9 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a brief refresher, Season 1 followed several teens with intersecting lives, including recovering drug addict Rue (Zendaya, 24, who scored an Emmy for the role), her trans-girl love interest Jules (Hunter Schafer), violently angry jock Nate (Jacob Elordi, \u201cThe Kissing Booth\u201d) and budding camgirl Kat (Barbie Ferreira). At the end of the season, Jules left Rue after a tearful goodbye, and Rue had a relapse after three months of sobriety.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The dark drama is an odd choice for a show with a holiday special, as none of this makes for cheery material. Nevertheless, it finds its own version of season\u2019s greetings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s everything you need to know about it.<\/p>\n

Spoilers below for \u201cPart 1: Rue.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The special follows Rue as she celebrates Christmas in a very Rue fashion. It opens with a fantasy-dream of Rue and Jules in bed together exchanging kisses and \u201cI love yous\u201d in a boho-chic apartment. But that idyllic picture soon dissolves into reality as Rue is revealed to be in a grimy diner bathroom, sans Jules.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She\u2019s with her Narcotics Anonymous sponsor Ali (Colman Domingo), eating pancakes on Christmas Eve. Almost immedia<\/a>tely, it becomes app<\/a>arent that Rue is not sober.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I just, like, made her the point,\u201d she rambles to him about her fractured relationship with Jules.\u00a0\u201cBut she\u2019s not the point. I\u2019m the point \u2026 I feel like I\u2019m making sane decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ali responds flatly, \u201cRue, you\u2019re high.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The rest of the episode proceeds with Rue and Ali talking about life, the future and sobriety, all while sitting across from each other in a mostly empty diner. The camera occasionally pans to the exterior and the parking lot, but it\u2019s essentially a two-person play, all in one location. Side characters don\u2019t appear. <\/p>\n

Their conversation is saved from feeling like a lecture with Ali\u2019s heartfelt lines \u2014 like \u201cI\u2019m not a guidance counselor. I\u2019m just a crackhead who\u2019s trying to do some good on this Earth before I die\u201d \u2014 and his tough-love moments, including, \u201cYou think you\u2019re tough; I\u2019m tougher. You\u2019re not a drug addict because you\u2019re a piece of s\u2013t. You\u2019re a piece of s\u2013t because you\u2019re a drug addict. Under all this busted-ass chaotic energy, you might even be a good kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a subdued hour, especially after Season 1\u2019s copious candy-colored party scenes, glitter and full-frontal nudity. Fans expecting that might be in for disappointment, as it\u2019s less \u201cRiverdale\u201d and more \u201cMy Dinner With Andre.\u201d Even pearl-clutching parent groups<\/a> will have little material for outrage, as there\u2019s nary a penis in sight. <\/p>\n

But party scenes or locker room scenes were out of the question, as it was also shot in the middle of the pandemic.\u00a0Instead, it\u2019s an acting showcase for Zendaya and Domingo. <\/p>\n

Will the second special be called \u201cPart 2: Jules,\u201d following what the other half of this split couple is doing over the holidays? Its plot has not yet been announced, but that\u2019s a safe bet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no word yet on a premiere date for the second special or for Season 2.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
