Facebook is overhauling its algorithms for removing hate speech, The Washington Post reports, because policies it thought were race-blind were upsetting a lot of black users and employees.<\/p>\n

Specifically, it\u2019s telling its robots to focus on \u201cthe worst of the worst,\u201d according to internal documents the paper obtained: \u201cslurs directed at Blacks, Muslims, people of more than one race, the LGBTQ community and Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bigotry against men, whites and Americans won\u2019t be automatically flagged, as they\u2019re \u201clow sensitivity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that hate speech targeted towards underrepresented groups can be the most harmful, which is why we have focused our technology<\/a> on finding the hate speech that users and experts tell us is the most serious,\u201d Facebook spokeswoman Sally Aldous told The Post.<\/p>\n

The old algorithms app<\/a>arently auto-deleted posts in which blacks were simply recounting experiences of racism. But rather than rectifying that problem, Facebook decided that racism against whites either isn\u2019t racism \u2014 or doesn\u2019t really count. You can write \u201cwhites are stupid\u201d for instance, and not get flagged. But if you said it about another race .\u2009.\u2009.<\/p>\n

How is this the answer? If Facebook feels its algorithms aren\u2019t finding hate speech, improve them. But how does flagging less of one thing mean you\u2019re going to find more of another?<\/p>\n

This doesn\u2019t seem like a fix at all: It sounds like Facebook\u2019s employees have decided that only certain kinds of bigotry matter.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
