Staten Island\u2019s self-proclaimed \u201cAutonomous Zone\u201d bar can\u2019t legally open its doors to customers, but the joint is still managing to clean up.<\/p>\n

A nearly week-old online fundraiser for Mac\u2019s Public House had raised $75,000 by Saturday afternoon. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve all been shuttered and struggling since the first shutdowns,\u201d co-owner Danny Presti says in the fundraiser.<\/p>\n

\u201cMac\u2019s Public House decided to take a stand for what is right, and we now ask for your support. With your help and donations, we will continue the fight to stay open, and anything we receive in excess of what we need will go towards assisting other small businesses fighting fines and getting reopened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just for Mac\u2019s, this is for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nearly 2,000 people had made donations via GoFundMe by Saturday.<\/p>\n

During sporadic openings this week, including on Friday night, the bar has been serving \u201cfree\u201d food and drink while requesting patrons make donations in lieu of payment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to get our livelihoods back,\u201d Presti explained to reporters Friday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t been able to pay the utilities,\u201d he added. \u201cJust everything\u2019s piling up. We\u2019re just scraping by.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mac\u2019s is located in a zip code with some of the highest coronavirus infection rates in the city, earning the neighborhood a state COVID-19 restriction \u201corange zone,\u201d designation, meaning take-out only is allowed. <\/p>\n

The bar\u2019s license to sell booze was yanked by the State Liquor Authority after it opened its doors and served customers anyway.<\/p>\n

Mac\u2019s has also racked up thousands in city fines and has been raided by the city Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese onerous restrictions left the owners no choice but to proceed in this manner,\u201d Presti\u2019s lawyer, Mark Fonte, told The Post Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point they have nothing to lose.\u201d <\/p>\n

The lawyer noted that just up the street from Mac\u2019s, restaurants in a less-restrictive zone can serve food indoors, just at reduced capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt must be a very smart virus that knows how to only stay within certain boundaries,\u201d Fonte quipped.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
