{"id":127448,"date":"2020-12-05T20:21:21","date_gmt":"2020-12-05T17:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/the-reasons-behind-2020s-national-christmas-tree-shortage\/"},"modified":"2020-12-05T20:21:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-05T17:21:21","slug":"the-reasons-behind-2020s-national-christmas-tree-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/the-reasons-behind-2020s-national-christmas-tree-shortage\/","title":{"rendered":"#The reasons behind 2020&#8217;s national Christmas tree shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#The reasons behind 2020&#8217;s national Christmas tree shortage<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree, how pricey are thy branches! <\/p>\n<p>Fewer tannenbaums are being offered for sale on the streets of New York City this holiday season and whether you are naughty or nice, it\u2019s going to cost you more than in years past, vendors and experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Reasons range from COVID-19 to the California wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan vendor SoHo Trees,\u00a0 which last year hawked the city\u2019s most expensive conifer \u2014 $6,500 for a single 20-foot Fraser fir \u2014 is sitting it out this season due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe safety of our customers and staff are of utmost importance to us. It is with a heavy heart to inform you that SoHo Trees will be taking a break from the 2020 holiday season,\u201d reads a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sohotrees.com\/\">website message<\/a> to  \u201cour loyal customers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>David Neville, who manages <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.christmastreedelivery-nyc.com\/\">NYC Tree Lady<\/a>, which sells \u201chand-picked\u201d exotic trees (like Nordmann and Korean firs) for up to $1,000 at five locations in Manhattan \u2014 including Astor Place \u2014 acknowledged  \u201cthere\u2019s a lot less Christmas tree stands in the city this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neville believes COVID-19 and the California wildfires caused a \u201cripple effect\u201d that contributed to a tree shortage. The nationwide supply could not satisfy the demand, which means higher prices across the board. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s only a certain amount of five to six foot Christmas trees planted five years ago. A fire wipes those out. Anything that can go wrong \u2014 does. It\u2019s a very tough business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Neville said there\u2019s a market for the \u201csmaller, cheaper\u201d  trees from North Carolina and Canada that he would sell in Chelsea, but they aren\u2019t making it to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would buy them in bulk, one thousand at a time, and we\u2019ve had a few of those loads canceled without explanation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hans Heep, 75, who lives in Greenwich Village, paid $75 for a \u201cslim, but beautiful\u201d 5-foot Fraser fir from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.treeridersnyc.com\/about\">Tree Riders NYC<\/a> at St. Marks Church. Last year, a similar conifer cost him $28. Heep, who hails from Austria, said back home he\u2019d pay $110 for his holiday tree, \u201cbut it was 10 feet tall!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erika Lee Sengstack, managing partner at Tree Riders NYC, theorized that \u201cpeople who come down from Canada are less likely to sell trees this year if they are going to have a hard time getting back. It\u2019s a hassle because of COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canadian tree farmer Jimmy Downey, who is also a spokesman for the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association,  explained \u201cthe market was very hard for the growers 10 years ago. \u2026 We went from 300 growers to 100 growers in Quebec. People were planting a lot less trees, so we have a lot less now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Downey said with demand high and supply low, farmers might simply be diverting their trees to wherever they can get top price. <\/p>\n<p>A 52-year-old West Village woman lamented her \u201cgo-to places\u201d for Christmas trees weren\u2019t in business this year and noticed that south of 14th Street, trees were more expensive than ever \u2014 with even \u201cdeli trees\u201d going for over $100.\u00a0However, she sniffed out a score on Sixth Avenue while walking her dog one early morning. \u201cI found a stand where a guy working the graveyard shift gave me a deal.
