An Ohio nursing home resident says a massive COVID-19 outbreak has turned its residents into \u201csitting ducks\u201d who can\u2019t afford to wait for a vaccine \u2014 prompting him to call 911 to plead they \u201cneed to be rescued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bruce MacGillis, 64,\u00a0said he feels \u201ctrapp<\/a>ed\u201d and \u201cdesperate\u201d as he waits for the arrival of a COVID-19 vaccine at his nursing home in Mentor, where 30 out of around 80 residents have tested positive in the last week alone, the Washington Post reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re at the mercy of this virus. We sit in here and we wait,\u201d MacGillis explained to the news<\/a>paper.<\/p>\n

MacGillis said that the infected residents live in sections of the facility separated by a plastic sheet hung across the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat plastic sheet keeps moving closer. I\u2019m trying not to panic, but where am I supposed to go? It\u2019s not like I can jump up and make a run for it. I\u2019m in a wheelchair,\u201d MacGillis said.<\/p>\n

He said that he fears that one of the employees or temporary staffers hired to fill staff shortages could be putting him at risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few months ago, an aide from a temp agency tried to come in to check my vitals. We didn\u2019t have any cases at that point, and I thought some people here were starting to get a little casual about it,\u201d MacGillis told the paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer mask was down by her chin. I\u2019d seen her with some of the other aides talking in the break room, and they weren\u2019t social<\/a> distancing up to my standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

MacGillis said he\u2019s felt increasingly \u201cdesperate\u201d as the virus keeps spreading throughout the nursing home.<\/p>\n

He claimed he called a county official and was told, \u201c30 new cases is not really considered all that extreme, and everyone is trying their best.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he got nowhere making more calls to other health officials, he called 911 and explained what was happening to the dispatcher, who replied by asking if he was in physical pain or wanted an ambulance, the paper reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no. It\u2019s bigger than that. We\u2019re sitting ducks. We all need to be rescued,\u201d he replied, according to the Washington Post. <\/p>\n

MacGillis said he\u2019s pinning his hopes on a COVID-19 vaccine, but doesn\u2019t know if it will be administered fast enough to save residents at the home. <\/p>\n

In the meantime, he plans to pin up a linen blanket over the door to his room to isolate.<\/p>\n

\u201cTotal isolation might be my only chance,\u201d he told the paper. \u201cI probably have to make it at least another month to the vaccine, and I guess that\u2019s when we\u2019ll become a priority.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
