This is what Greg Williams Jr. is capable of. This is what St. John\u2019s needs from him. This aggressive, take-charge player is what the coaching staff has been pleading for him to become.<\/p>\n

With the Johnnies flat, letting an inferior opponent build a six-point lead, Williams finally left his passivity in the past.<\/p>\n

He forced the issue. He hunted shots. He provided a needed jolt, snapp<\/a>ing his teammates from their doldrums in an 89-66 victory over Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.<\/p>\n

Williams, a talented 6-foot-3 junior guard, scored 12 points in a blur of a 30-2 run bridging the first half and second halves. When it began, the Johnnies were down six. By the end of it, the lead was 24. He scored 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting, and added six steals, four rebounds and three assists.<\/p>\n

There were other positives. Isaih Moore was a force in the paint, with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Julian Champagnie reached double figures for the third straight time. Unheralded redshirt freshman John McGriff gave quality minutes, notching five points and four assists. The Johnnies shared the ball to the tune of 22 assists \u2014 seven players had at least three \u2014 after questionable shot selection in Wednesday\u2019s loss to BYU.<\/p>\n

But Williams was by far the biggest bright spot in this bounce-back win, especially after taking just six shots in the BYU game<\/a>. As a sophomore he was too often not aggressive enough. That was again the case in the season opener against Saint Peter\u2019s.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s too talented to be a supporting player, particularly with the makeup of this young roster. That was evident in the Johnnies\u2019 lone loss. Sunday afternoon, he took charge, eliminating any chance of an upset.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
