“#FDNY COVID-19 vaccine skepticism fueled by ‘education issue’: union<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

A \u201creal education issue\u201d is partly to blame for a new poll that found more than half of FDNY firefighters plan on skipping the coronavirus vaccine, with some smoke-eaters who have already beaten the bug believing they don\u2019t need the shot, a union head said Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThirty-five percent of our members have already been infected and they\u2019re under the impression that they have antibodies that protect them,\u201d said Andy Ansbro, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association union, in a press briefing outside the headquarters of Engine Company 3, Ladder Company 12 on West 19th Street in Manhattan.<\/p>\n

A poll of 2,053 firefighters \u2014 about a quarter of the UFA\u2019s membership \u2014 found that 55 percent will refuse to take the vaccine once it becomes available, The Post exclusively reported Saturday.<\/p>\n

Ansbro said Sunday that there\u2019s a significant overlap between that figure and the 35 percent of UFA members who have already had the coronavirus and may believe that they can\u2019t be re-infected.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you take the 35 percent, the people that actually don\u2019t want it is quite lower. Some think they don\u2019t actually need it,\u201d he said. \u201cSo there\u2019s a real education issue that we need to overcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evidence has shown that it is possible to contract the coronavirus multiple times.<\/p>\n

Ansbro added that some members have misgivings about receiving the Pfizer vaccine \u2014 which is still awaiting app<\/a>roval by the federal Food and Drug Administration \u2014 while some want to make sure others are covered first.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are always going to be people that don\u2019t want to be on the front line of a vaccination, and that is their right,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have members that would rather have someone else have it than them. They don\u2019t want to be on the front of the line. But the department needs them to be on the front of the line. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe need them to be on the front of the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ansbro said that he has not seen a reduction in public trust of the FDNY amid the pandemic, and that he does anticipate that changing even if the poll figures hold true.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone failed to call us in the last eight months,\u201d he said. \u201cIf your house is on fire, you\u2019re not exactly going to worry about a virus. It\u2019s just not going to happen. We haven\u2019t seen that happen. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a steady supply of [personal protective equipment] and if a member has symptoms they don\u2019t go to work,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe pandemic has affected us in certain ways, but if we are all wearing our masks, we are not a danger to the public if we choose not to get a vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n

While proper mask usage does significantly reduce the spread of the coronavirus, it does not entirely eliminate it.<\/p>\n

On the heels of the poll\u2019s release, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that he will take the coronavirus vaccine \u2014 the first 170,000 doses of which are expected to arrive in the state by Dec. 15 \u2014 in an attempt to build public confidence.<\/p>\n

Ansbro, who has publicly stated that he intends to get the vaccine, said that the UFA would work with the FDNY to encourage the shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to encourage our department members to get it and we\u2019re going to work with the department to encourage our members to get it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut in the end, it\u2019s their choice.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
